We are back in Seattle

It feels like home. Of course we are not in Silshole. Maybe we will be, someday, but there is a list and we are on it. In the meantime we are at Bainbridge Island Marina.

The dinghy holds air again

It wasn't very nice of the bear to tear the fabric across a seam. We were worried that we couldn't patch it but tried anyway. The glue had a job to do and it did it!

A Grizzly Bear damaged our dinghy

We were visiting the Anan Bear Observatory south of Wrangell. It is one of the best places to visit in all of SE Alaska BECAUSE it has bears. But (as we learned) there is a dark side to this bear concentration. And of course, there is a story to tell.

Moving On

"No matter where you go, there you are" (unknown reference). By now we have been there and done that. Most recently that included Cannery Cove on Admiralty Island. The photo shows the quiet grandeur of the setting with Ron and Suzie's boat SV Tango in the foreground. It has been like that for the last [...]

We are in Hoonah, SE Alaska now

We got something resembling a high pressure ridge so we moved expeditously across the Gulf of Alaska. The crossing took three days and weather stayed as forecast. That was a very good thing. The weather changes in the far north far more rapidly and dramatically than we ever experienced in the more southern [...]

Crossing the Gulf of Alaska

We are still in Seward, AK. Now that spring has come, why not start south?

Jungle River Cruise

28 March 2011 | San Blas, Mexico
Larry Nelson
Karen insisted that I get up early in the morning so we could start our cruise at the right time to see the birds. It was a good idea. We were up at 6:30 am (dawn). I've posted some pictures in an album. People told us this was a must do thing in San Blas and we agree. It took about 4 hours and included an "endless" trail through the mangroves with birds at every turn then opened up into a grassy plain. At a fork in the river we went to the crocodile farm, whee they are raising baby crocodiles. The farm looked pretty "low rate" as far as production goes and maybe that is just as well. There have been a number of incidents of crocodiles eating people so these are not trivial animals to live around.

After the crocodile farm we took a different fork in the river and ended at a spring where all the water for San Blas originates. The noise of the 330 KVA pumps degraded the beauty of the spring. They fenced off the spring from the river after a couple were attacked a year or so ago. So, I suppose it is safe to swim now. The water is clear and warm. They provide a swing to get in! We enjoyed a late breakfast and then headed back to town. The trip back was mid day and there was indeed less to see than when we went in the early morning.

After returning to town we hiked up to the fort (built in 1550 about) which was built on a rock hill that gives a great view of the town.

On the way home we ordered a pizza delivered to the boat for dinner. That worked out to be a GREAT idea.

Karen is holding up well so far. She had plenty of energy and didn't complain of pain. So far so good. She has a lot of healing to get done in the next week or so. (before the stitches come out)

When we got back, our dinghy motor was still on the boat so staying at the marina was probably a good idea. Cost..about $30 USD per night. Tomorrow morning we will leave for Isla Isabella to see some Blue Footed boobies.
