We are back in Seattle

It feels like home. Of course we are not in Silshole. Maybe we will be, someday, but there is a list and we are on it. In the meantime we are at Bainbridge Island Marina.

The dinghy holds air again

It wasn't very nice of the bear to tear the fabric across a seam. We were worried that we couldn't patch it but tried anyway. The glue had a job to do and it did it!

A Grizzly Bear damaged our dinghy

We were visiting the Anan Bear Observatory south of Wrangell. It is one of the best places to visit in all of SE Alaska BECAUSE it has bears. But (as we learned) there is a dark side to this bear concentration. And of course, there is a story to tell.

Moving On

"No matter where you go, there you are" (unknown reference). By now we have been there and done that. Most recently that included Cannery Cove on Admiralty Island. The photo shows the quiet grandeur of the setting with Ron and Suzie's boat SV Tango in the foreground. It has been like that for the last [...]

We are in Hoonah, SE Alaska now

We got something resembling a high pressure ridge so we moved expeditously across the Gulf of Alaska. The crossing took three days and weather stayed as forecast. That was a very good thing. The weather changes in the far north far more rapidly and dramatically than we ever experienced in the more southern [...]

Crossing the Gulf of Alaska

We are still in Seward, AK. Now that spring has come, why not start south?

Safety Cat is at Puerto Escondido

First the good news: Safety Cat has arrived at Puerto Escondido where they will haul out and stage the boat to complete the repair and recovery of the vessel. This was the big event that Nick and Andrea have been wishing can happen. This story has a happy ending!

Panta Rhei has traversed the "Northern Crossing" from Santa Rosalia to San Carlos and moved into slip A7. It's a shallow slip but it was the best alternative available. We think we will float "most of the time". We did go in at a zero tide and in the next month there is only one day with a minus tide (minus 0.2 meter). Were we floating by 6 inches when we arrived? Maybe. Will we settle far enough into the mud? Maybe. It only happens on July 27. The rest of the tides are all higher than when we arrived.

The trip across was perfect. We had wind on the beam at about 15 knots basically all the way across. We napped and read books while we crossed. Seas were easy and the sun was out. The wind in the cockpit was light and just the right temperature. As we crossed from Baja to the Mainland we noticed a distinct cooling. It is about 10 degrees F cooler here than in Baja. WE left at 4 am and as we traveled East we gained an hour. How can this happen? Nobody can explain it, but it has something to do with the fact that Arizona doesn't observe daylight saving time and Baja does we are told. We arrived at 4 pm with plenty of time to arrange for our slip and buy fuel. In the marina the wind was blowing 27 knots. We don't know why but it seems to do this about every afternoon. We parked and waited for the wind to subside before going to our assigned slip. It's tough to enter; too tough to do with 27 knots of wind. That plan was just right and we are now safe and secure while the wind increases yet again. This is going to mess up barbecuing dinner this afternoon...

We retrieved the car from its garage. Wonder of wonders, after sitting for a month and a half it started just fine. But it is covered in dust. So we are off to the car wash. Today we will pack for the trip and tomorrow we'll leave.

The fun never stops!
