We are back in Seattle

It feels like home. Of course we are not in Silshole. Maybe we will be, someday, but there is a list and we are on it. In the meantime we are at Bainbridge Island Marina.

The dinghy holds air again

It wasn't very nice of the bear to tear the fabric across a seam. We were worried that we couldn't patch it but tried anyway. The glue had a job to do and it did it!

A Grizzly Bear damaged our dinghy

We were visiting the Anan Bear Observatory south of Wrangell. It is one of the best places to visit in all of SE Alaska BECAUSE it has bears. But (as we learned) there is a dark side to this bear concentration. And of course, there is a story to tell.

Moving On

"No matter where you go, there you are" (unknown reference). By now we have been there and done that. Most recently that included Cannery Cove on Admiralty Island. The photo shows the quiet grandeur of the setting with Ron and Suzie's boat SV Tango in the foreground. It has been like that for the last [...]

We are in Hoonah, SE Alaska now

We got something resembling a high pressure ridge so we moved expeditously across the Gulf of Alaska. The crossing took three days and weather stayed as forecast. That was a very good thing. The weather changes in the far north far more rapidly and dramatically than we ever experienced in the more southern [...]

Crossing the Gulf of Alaska

We are still in Seward, AK. Now that spring has come, why not start south?

Happy to be home on Panta Rhei

We've completed our land trip through the US. We visited as much as our friends could stand and then we hiked and camped in high alpine meadows and next to streams. Temperatures were moderate, but not so cool that we couldn't still wear our retirement uniforms (T shirt and shorts with sandals). We almost forgot how hot it is in Mexico this time of the year. We ran the air conditioning in the car all through Arizona and New Mexico and Mexico, so it was a shock when we stepped aboard our 96F boat. But we turned on our air conditioners and are doing much better. Stepping outside is like stepping into a blast furnace. Time to start "power drinking" again.

The marina is stuffed with our friends boats (and a few of our friends). We'll send reports to those that are still away, visit with those that are living aboard in the marina, and run a few errands for the friends we will be visiting in the north part of the Sea of Cortez. Then we'll depart for sea again. What's it like to return home after being gone so long? Well, when we returned home just about dark we discovered a carnival in the marina parking lot. The best exhibit was the bull ride. They had a mechanical bull surrounded by inflatable cushions that people were trying to ride. No one beats the bull though. We had almost forgotten what a party we live in!

So what is the rest of the plan? We will spend a few days getting the boat packed and ready for sea. We'll be going to the northern part of the Sea of Cortez where there are few stores and virtually no services (like NO cell phones or high speed data). We'll be there for a month or two while we wait for hurricane season to abate. Then we'll head south. The plan is to be in Panama by Christmas and the Galapagos Islands by March 2012. Along we way we want to squeeze in another land trip up the Copper Canyon and some engine and windlass work in Mazatlan. That's about as detailed as the plan gets.

We will still be in communication via text email using our single sideband radio with the services of amateur radio operators. We expect to spend a lot of time swimming, reading, and socializing with friends.

Is there any better way to spend retirement time? (The picture is Larry on a hike through alpine meadows near Breckenridge CO)
