We are back in Seattle

It feels like home. Of course we are not in Silshole. Maybe we will be, someday, but there is a list and we are on it. In the meantime we are at Bainbridge Island Marina.

The dinghy holds air again

It wasn't very nice of the bear to tear the fabric across a seam. We were worried that we couldn't patch it but tried anyway. The glue had a job to do and it did it!

A Grizzly Bear damaged our dinghy

We were visiting the Anan Bear Observatory south of Wrangell. It is one of the best places to visit in all of SE Alaska BECAUSE it has bears. But (as we learned) there is a dark side to this bear concentration. And of course, there is a story to tell.

Moving On

"No matter where you go, there you are" (unknown reference). By now we have been there and done that. Most recently that included Cannery Cove on Admiralty Island. The photo shows the quiet grandeur of the setting with Ron and Suzie's boat SV Tango in the foreground. It has been like that for the last [...]

We are in Hoonah, SE Alaska now

We got something resembling a high pressure ridge so we moved expeditously across the Gulf of Alaska. The crossing took three days and weather stayed as forecast. That was a very good thing. The weather changes in the far north far more rapidly and dramatically than we ever experienced in the more southern [...]

Crossing the Gulf of Alaska

We are still in Seward, AK. Now that spring has come, why not start south?

Hurricane Hillary, Category 4 hurricane

23 September 2011 | Puerrto Refugio, Mexico
Larry Nelson
We are in the season (Sept until late Oct) when hurricanes that start in the south of Mexico sometimes track north into the Sea of Cortez. Hurricanes such as Hillary are what we came all this way north to avoid. We're about to find out if the plan was a good one. Hurricane Hillary is becoming a major storm. Right now the models show it turning west out to sea, but it is too soon to tell for sure. There is a possibility it could turn north and cross over Baja. The first question is, "Will it turn north". The second question is, "If it turns north, where will it cross over Baja". Finally there is a reality that as storms die, their direction turns schizophrenic. Every where becomes at risk. these storms even turn back on themselves (when they die). Even a dying category 4 hurricane is a serious concern. By Sunday our weather advisors suggest we should have a much better idea of whether this storm will in fact turn west and leave us alone or...

On the bright side of the ledger, we didn't have any chubascos last night.

Today or tomorrow we will head back toward Puerto Don Juan, our "hurricane hole". We considered going north to Bahia Willard but that is not the direction we want in order to return to San Carlos where we are scheduled to arrive Oct 2. So far, we're not too worried, but we are in "a heightened state of awareness".
