SV Panta Rhei Retirement Trip
Termites
Larry Nelson
02 December 2011 | Mazatlan, MX
Swarms of these little buggers have assaulted Panta Rhei while we have been in Mexico. They fly aboard. They have huge wings, but after they have landed they lose their wings. Then what?

Yesterday morning we learned a little more of the story. The picture shows little piles of sawdust under our radar display. When Karen noticed them you'd have thought the boat was on fire. OK...so I admit it is BAD. The picture shows the little piles that we saw. It turns out termites don't eat teak, but they do eat plywood and they do eat cherry. We have lots of 'food' for termites.

We had an exterminator come aboard today. He gets a lot of business from boats (Now you tell me!). We fumigated the boat and we went away from the boat for a few hours. We'll do it again in 30 days. That's the RX for termites. While we were at it we had him add cockroach killer. And Karen threw out the oatmeal with bugs in it. That's unrelated but it does underscore that there are bugs everywhere!

If you are thinking that if we were at sea we wouldn't have this problem, rethink what you have read. What we wouldn't have is an exterminator close at hand!

I knew that while we were waiting for our new engine the boat would continue breaking, but I never expected this.
