We are back in Seattle

It feels like home. Of course we are not in Silshole. Maybe we will be, someday, but there is a list and we are on it. In the meantime we are at Bainbridge Island Marina.

The dinghy holds air again

It wasn't very nice of the bear to tear the fabric across a seam. We were worried that we couldn't patch it but tried anyway. The glue had a job to do and it did it!

A Grizzly Bear damaged our dinghy

We were visiting the Anan Bear Observatory south of Wrangell. It is one of the best places to visit in all of SE Alaska BECAUSE it has bears. But (as we learned) there is a dark side to this bear concentration. And of course, there is a story to tell.

Moving On

"No matter where you go, there you are" (unknown reference). By now we have been there and done that. Most recently that included Cannery Cove on Admiralty Island. The photo shows the quiet grandeur of the setting with Ron and Suzie's boat SV Tango in the foreground. It has been like that for the last [...]

We are in Hoonah, SE Alaska now

We got something resembling a high pressure ridge so we moved expeditously across the Gulf of Alaska. The crossing took three days and weather stayed as forecast. That was a very good thing. The weather changes in the far north far more rapidly and dramatically than we ever experienced in the more southern [...]

Crossing the Gulf of Alaska

We are still in Seward, AK. Now that spring has come, why not start south?

Smooth water feels good

20 January 2012 | Barra de Navidad, MX
Larry Nelson
We've finished the journey from La Cruz to Barra de Navidad. We made a stop along the way at Careyes, where the rich definitely live. Some of the houses were beyond amazing. One house has a suspension bridge to their own island from their home on the mainland up high on a cliff. They were painted irridescent blue, orange, yellow, and other very bright colors. They had stairways to their own private beach and also a powered rail car like we see in the high rent district of Lake Washington. The water in Careyes was clear and 81F. So I cleaned the boat. Mazatlan can grow things even on good bottom paint. Since the water was clear, I could see the growth and excise it from the hull. After the hull cleaning we went ashore where we found that the hotel was closed. Apparently the hurricane in October that hit Barra also hit Careyes. The roofs were damaged. The swimming pool at the hotel was full and the lawn was immaculately trimmed. It must be discouraging to fix up a hotel after a hurricane when you know occupancy rates are dismal. There was talk among the locals that the hotel would be converted to condos. Those aren't selling either though.

Bara has smooth water....like we had at Mazatlan at the dock. So tonight we will sleep like logs. Tomorrow Jake is returning from Sharon's mother's funeral. We are parked next to them and looking forward to a visit.

The picture is of my favorite blue house. its not the biggest house nor does it have the best location, but the lawn and the blue color make it strikingly different. His neighbor also painted his house blue, so the question arises, "Who painted their house blue first?"
