We are back in Seattle

It feels like home. Of course we are not in Silshole. Maybe we will be, someday, but there is a list and we are on it. In the meantime we are at Bainbridge Island Marina.

The dinghy holds air again

It wasn't very nice of the bear to tear the fabric across a seam. We were worried that we couldn't patch it but tried anyway. The glue had a job to do and it did it!

A Grizzly Bear damaged our dinghy

We were visiting the Anan Bear Observatory south of Wrangell. It is one of the best places to visit in all of SE Alaska BECAUSE it has bears. But (as we learned) there is a dark side to this bear concentration. And of course, there is a story to tell.

Moving On

"No matter where you go, there you are" (unknown reference). By now we have been there and done that. Most recently that included Cannery Cove on Admiralty Island. The photo shows the quiet grandeur of the setting with Ron and Suzie's boat SV Tango in the foreground. It has been like that for the last [...]

We are in Hoonah, SE Alaska now

We got something resembling a high pressure ridge so we moved expeditously across the Gulf of Alaska. The crossing took three days and weather stayed as forecast. That was a very good thing. The weather changes in the far north far more rapidly and dramatically than we ever experienced in the more southern [...]

Crossing the Gulf of Alaska

We are still in Seward, AK. Now that spring has come, why not start south?

Bank experience in Golfito, Costa Rica

27 February 2012 | Golfito Costa Rica
Larry Nelson
We've begun the international check out process. First step, see the port captain and get a statement of funds to be paid. It's $50 USD and we have to pay it at the bank. The bank has an armed guard at a "vault" entrance. Push the button for permission to enter and the door opens. Step in. The door closes. It's a small spot
; don't try to raise your arms. The door opens to the guard area. He requires you to remove your hat. No worry about weapons...really. But, hats are not allowed. The bank is crowded. There about 10 employees, all working hard. But little is happening. We had a ticket #74 for service. The counter was at #52 when we entered. We had to get the zarpe payment form typed. That took about 30 minutes (It is one sentence). Then we got in line to pay. We have 4 copies of the zarpe payment form. Eventually our number comes up (maybe 45 minutes more) and the teller types furiously and stamps forms and generally moves things back and forth until he can take our $50 USD in cash. We get one piece of paper and a receipt and we are done. Then we reverse the process with the guard at the gate. Now realize there are lots of people in the bank with us, but basically no one moves. We all sit...and sit. But the good news is that we have done that part of the task and we are expecting the checkout at customs and immigration to go fairly smoothly tomorrow morning. Then we will have 24 hours to actually leave. It appears our timing is good. The wind is blowing now near the panama canal but it should ease by the time we get there. It's a noserly, of course.

Now about the rest of the town... We discovered a GREAT restaurant that served seafood. We ordered Dorado stuffed with shrimp and covered in a jalapeno sauce. It was the finest seafood we have ever eaten. Absolutely perfectly cooked. The restaurant was a simple place and not crowded. Total cost for two with drinks (margarita) and dessert (coconut flan) was $41 USD including tax and tip. The name of the restaurant was Cosona de Mariscos.
