We are back in Seattle

It feels like home. Of course we are not in Silshole. Maybe we will be, someday, but there is a list and we are on it. In the meantime we are at Bainbridge Island Marina.

The dinghy holds air again

It wasn't very nice of the bear to tear the fabric across a seam. We were worried that we couldn't patch it but tried anyway. The glue had a job to do and it did it!

15 August 2017 | Anan Bear Observatory

A Grizzly Bear damaged our dinghy

We were visiting the Anan Bear Observatory south of Wrangell. It is one of the best places to visit in all of SE Alaska BECAUSE it has bears. But (as we learned) there is a dark side to this bear concentration. And of course, there is a story to tell.

Moving On

"No matter where you go, there you are" (unknown reference). By now we have been there and done that. Most recently that included Cannery Cove on Admiralty Island. The photo shows the quiet grandeur of the setting with Ron and Suzie's boat SV Tango in the foreground. It has been like that for the last [...]

We are in Hoonah, SE Alaska now

We got something resembling a high pressure ridge so we moved expeditously across the Gulf of Alaska. The crossing took three days and weather stayed as forecast. That was a very good thing. The weather changes in the far north far more rapidly and dramatically than we ever experienced in the more southern [...]

Crossing the Gulf of Alaska

We are still in Seward, AK. Now that spring has come, why not start south?

White Squall

25 March 2012 | Underway for Galapagos Islands
Larry Nelson
We are sailing in the InterTropical Convergence Zone ITCZ and we've seen signs of thunderstorm activity in the distance. Today we got to see them up close. Who would have thought it? Aren't we near to the Galapagos (Desert) Islands?

Karen grabbed a mop and with the first rain she swabbed the deck. Then she called Larry on deck. Winds were beginning to gust. We debated what to do for a while. After all, we were hooked on SPEED. Finally about a 23 knot gust came from forward, laying the boat on its ear and rattling the jib.

Reef time, all hands. In short order we had a double reef in the mainsail. It's much easier in the daylight. Usually we get to do this in the utter pitch blackness of night with an overcast. It is then "darker than the inside of a pig". You may not know this but pigs are opaque. If you doubt this, try holding a pork chop up to the light.

This squall wasn't too bad. Before it had passed we had moved to double reefed jib AND double reefed main. That turned out to be overkill. Now we have all the reefs out and we are going about 3.6 knots. The apparent wind has dropped to 6.5 kn. We're suffering withdrawl symptoms from the opiate of sailors, speed.

Trip log :11238 Distance to go: 164 nm

I don't know if you've noticed but we are less than one degree latitude. Before tomorrow three Polywogs will be reporting in as Shellbacks and King Neptune will have our email address!
