We are back in Seattle

It feels like home. Of course we are not in Silshole. Maybe we will be, someday, but there is a list and we are on it. In the meantime we are at Bainbridge Island Marina.

The dinghy holds air again

It wasn't very nice of the bear to tear the fabric across a seam. We were worried that we couldn't patch it but tried anyway. The glue had a job to do and it did it!

15 August 2017 | Anan Bear Observatory

A Grizzly Bear damaged our dinghy

We were visiting the Anan Bear Observatory south of Wrangell. It is one of the best places to visit in all of SE Alaska BECAUSE it has bears. But (as we learned) there is a dark side to this bear concentration. And of course, there is a story to tell.

Moving On

"No matter where you go, there you are" (unknown reference). By now we have been there and done that. Most recently that included Cannery Cove on Admiralty Island. The photo shows the quiet grandeur of the setting with Ron and Suzie's boat SV Tango in the foreground. It has been like that for the last [...]

We are in Hoonah, SE Alaska now

We got something resembling a high pressure ridge so we moved expeditously across the Gulf of Alaska. The crossing took three days and weather stayed as forecast. That was a very good thing. The weather changes in the far north far more rapidly and dramatically than we ever experienced in the more southern [...]

Crossing the Gulf of Alaska

We are still in Seward, AK. Now that spring has come, why not start south?

What we haven't been doing

29 April 2012 | Enroute to Marquesas Islands, French Polynesia from Galapagos
Larry Nelson
15th day and we still have almost a week to go. What do we not do at sea that we used to do every day?

We haven't been to a grocery store of any kind. This leaves us without lettuce and ice cream bars. We're also getting low on M&Ms.

We haven't carried keys in our pockets. Or wallets. Or coin purses. We haven't been to a cash machine. We haven't written a check.

We haven't placed a phone call (or received one). We haven't watched a live TV program. We haven't stayed up late (we tend to go to bed when the sun sets now). We don't receive much news (a few email topics only).

We don't eat out. We eat in and that has been pretty good. But we are limited by the ingredients that we can buy in third world countries. I caught myself dreaming about prime beef and chicken fried steaks with hash browns and eggs the other day. Those are beyond hard to find or expensive. I admit that I am drifting a little from the "every day" subject of this post.

We haven't driven a car or gone for a walk.

We haven't been in to the bosses office for a "little talk".

We haven't been to a soda machine or a candy machine.

We haven't updated our computer security software. No internet access equals no problem.

We haven't been to a gas station.

We haven't been to the gym. This is not a good thing. Sail repairs might count as exercise. It made me ache all over. We do a lap around the deck each morning to clean up flying fish and squid.

We haven't had friends "drop over". We do this virtually now using the ssb and email.

We haven't drunk any alcohol. This is just a practical way not to increase the chance of getting seasick. And of course drinking wine while writing email is just not as good as drinking wine with a friend that is present. We'll drink at the bar when we tell the stories of the trip. In the same thought thread we haven't had a latte or moca either and we are close to out of Diet Coke. Panta Rhei is at risk of beverage ignominy. Yesterday, Karen made a jug of ice tea served with real ice cubes. The sweat on the glass matched our personal perspiration incontinence.

We haven't been going fast. Right now the wind is light and we are struggling to keep up 5 knots.

Finally, We haven't ended this post.
