We are back in Seattle

It feels like home. Of course we are not in Silshole. Maybe we will be, someday, but there is a list and we are on it. In the meantime we are at Bainbridge Island Marina.

The dinghy holds air again

It wasn't very nice of the bear to tear the fabric across a seam. We were worried that we couldn't patch it but tried anyway. The glue had a job to do and it did it!

A Grizzly Bear damaged our dinghy

We were visiting the Anan Bear Observatory south of Wrangell. It is one of the best places to visit in all of SE Alaska BECAUSE it has bears. But (as we learned) there is a dark side to this bear concentration. And of course, there is a story to tell.

Moving On

"No matter where you go, there you are" (unknown reference). By now we have been there and done that. Most recently that included Cannery Cove on Admiralty Island. The photo shows the quiet grandeur of the setting with Ron and Suzie's boat SV Tango in the foreground. It has been like that for the last [...]

We are in Hoonah, SE Alaska now

We got something resembling a high pressure ridge so we moved expeditously across the Gulf of Alaska. The crossing took three days and weather stayed as forecast. That was a very good thing. The weather changes in the far north far more rapidly and dramatically than we ever experienced in the more southern [...]

Crossing the Gulf of Alaska

We are still in Seward, AK. Now that spring has come, why not start south?

Getting Propane (actually Butane)

10 May 2012 | Enroute to Marquesas Islands, French Polynesia from Galapagos
Larry Nelson
We are almost out of propane and they don't have propane on this island. There are rumors of propane availability (conditioned on tanks less than 10 year old.) in Papette. We would be very hungry for hot food by then. What to do?

There are exchangable steel tanks available at the general store that have butane. Some cruisers are changing out their propane bottles temporairly. My neighbor was much more clever. He went to the hardware store and bought a regulator. Then he cut off the end of the regulator to get just the fitting that screws onto the butane tank. Then he found a hose fitting that would fit inside of the threaded fitting for the butane tank and some rubber washers. He took his propane tank fitting and cut the hose and pressed that onto the hose fitting and drilled out the end of the propane tank fitting to a size that would allow liquid to flow. Then he hangs the butane tank into the air in his cockpit and attaches it to the propane tank below it. Open the valve on the side of the propane tank and the valve on the top of the butane tank and presto, liquid butane flows into the tank! The guide books say you need an "adaptor". Well this is it and I've borrowed it to use in filling my tank today.

The ship just arrived also. It is supposed to have diesel aboard so that we can begin the process of jerry jugging the fuel aboard Panta Rhei. That is what we will do today.

Life in paradise is getting pretty primitave! I found it hard to believe that such basic items would be so difficult to get but that is the reality.

Tomorrow we are going on a tour of the island. We've hired a van with a bunch of other cruisers for the trip.

Note that I have posted some more photos in a gallery on this blog titled Marquesas.
