We are back in Seattle

It feels like home. Of course we are not in Silshole. Maybe we will be, someday, but there is a list and we are on it. In the meantime we are at Bainbridge Island Marina.

The dinghy holds air again

It wasn't very nice of the bear to tear the fabric across a seam. We were worried that we couldn't patch it but tried anyway. The glue had a job to do and it did it!

A Grizzly Bear damaged our dinghy

We were visiting the Anan Bear Observatory south of Wrangell. It is one of the best places to visit in all of SE Alaska BECAUSE it has bears. But (as we learned) there is a dark side to this bear concentration. And of course, there is a story to tell.

Moving On

"No matter where you go, there you are" (unknown reference). By now we have been there and done that. Most recently that included Cannery Cove on Admiralty Island. The photo shows the quiet grandeur of the setting with Ron and Suzie's boat SV Tango in the foreground. It has been like that for the last [...]

We are in Hoonah, SE Alaska now

We got something resembling a high pressure ridge so we moved expeditously across the Gulf of Alaska. The crossing took three days and weather stayed as forecast. That was a very good thing. The weather changes in the far north far more rapidly and dramatically than we ever experienced in the more southern [...]

Crossing the Gulf of Alaska

We are still in Seward, AK. Now that spring has come, why not start south?

On our way again

20 May 2012 | Enroute to Rangiroa, Tuamotos, French Polynesia
Larry Nelson
We departed Nuku Hiva this morning at 8 am, this time with a crew of 2 aboard. Were already missing Kent and Katie. The wind is forecast on the beam 15 to 20 knots all the way to Rangiroa. We're going fast. It could be a 3 day passage. Of course we plan to slow down a little at night but still....

We mostly filled the water tanks before we left. Our watermaker is making water at about 20% of its normal rate. When we get to Rangiroa I plan to pull the sea chest and clean it. I think that is the problem. With only 2 people aboard we won't use as much water. Still, having a wounded watermaker makes me feel "at risk".

We did get to a broadband internet facility but not long enough to download many of the pictures that we have. We'll get to it as soon as we can. The priority goes to weather and navigation information. Internet in Nuku Hiva is unreliable, slow, and expensive.

Rangiroa is a very large atoll. Its about 50 miles by 30 miles. We selected this destination because it has pretty good passages into the lagoon and what appears to be a good anchorage. There is also a "blue lagoon" to explore. It sounds good... And there is diving in the pass into the main lagoon. Also, it is directly on the way to Papette, Tahiti the next stop.

Right now Karen is asleep. With a crew of 2 we need to keep getting rest at every opportunity.

Trip log: 14718 Distance to Rangiroa 546 nm Speed over Ground 8.7 kn Course over Ground 217M
