A Preview of our Next Destination
31 July 2012 | Bora Bora, French Polynesia
We are in Bora Bora now but we've check out and will leave either tomorrow morning or the next day. My brother provided a picture of our destination which I wanted to share. It is Suvarov Island located about 500 miles from anything else and smack in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. It is a reef that goes almost completely underwater at high tide. One concern, it is "sharky". It is supposed to have amazing coral and clear water. What to do?
We just finished a climb of the mountain at the center of Bora Bora. It was an amazing jungle climb. Basically it was a "root" climb except where there weren't any roots and then they had fixed lines in place. Karen and I made it about 2/3 of the way. We dropped out when the exposure exceed all reasonable limits. In any event we were TIRED at the end of the climb. We got to the base of the rock band at the top of the mountain,...past the second fixed rope. The route had dry dirt at the bottom, but at the top it was slick clay with near vertical exposure. Too much for people on Social Security.
We'll send position updates via our ssb. No pictures for a while though. We have about a half month of very great isolation in the middle of the Pacific until we get to the next internet in Pago Pago (American Samoa).
