We are back in Seattle

It feels like home. Of course we are not in Silshole. Maybe we will be, someday, but there is a list and we are on it. In the meantime we are at Bainbridge Island Marina.

The dinghy holds air again

It wasn't very nice of the bear to tear the fabric across a seam. We were worried that we couldn't patch it but tried anyway. The glue had a job to do and it did it!

A Grizzly Bear damaged our dinghy

We were visiting the Anan Bear Observatory south of Wrangell. It is one of the best places to visit in all of SE Alaska BECAUSE it has bears. But (as we learned) there is a dark side to this bear concentration. And of course, there is a story to tell.

Moving On

"No matter where you go, there you are" (unknown reference). By now we have been there and done that. Most recently that included Cannery Cove on Admiralty Island. The photo shows the quiet grandeur of the setting with Ron and Suzie's boat SV Tango in the foreground. It has been like that for the last [...]

We are in Hoonah, SE Alaska now

We got something resembling a high pressure ridge so we moved expeditously across the Gulf of Alaska. The crossing took three days and weather stayed as forecast. That was a very good thing. The weather changes in the far north far more rapidly and dramatically than we ever experienced in the more southern [...]

Crossing the Gulf of Alaska

We are still in Seward, AK. Now that spring has come, why not start south?

A new Low pressure area is developing

Everyone is watching the weather now. We all see the same thing. A new low pressure center is developing on our rumb line to Fiji and is forecast to move south along that rumb line before it moves east. In other words, if we leave today, 4 days from now we will be pummeled with 30 knot winds and 15 foot seas. It could get worse during those 4 days if the low deepens. Or, it could get better. In New Zealand, we always bet on worse and we don't lose often.

Also, in the 9 am mail transit the hose for our autopilot ram did not come. We can't go anywhere without that hose....not even to the fuel dock since hydraulic fluid will spray around the engine room whenever the wheel is turned. I'm told it will be here at 2 pm. I hope so, but the promise is coming from the same people that said it would be here at 9 am.

Our NZ visas are up today, not tomorrow. They take these dates very seriously here. We called and asked for relief and got 24 hours but with warning that as of 12:00 midnight tomorrow we would be unlawfully in NZ. So what does that mean? It means that if we have checked out from Customs we are expected to leave. We probably can have half an hour to get going. There are patrol boats (and helicopters and airplanes) that monitor traffic and they KNOW whether we are leaving or not. Friends have been checked when coming north to Opua. This is really true. I'm not sure we would make the 10 most wanted list if we can't leave tomorrow, but it sure feels like we would.

We are thinking that we can leave for Savusavu Fiji tomorrow unless the forecast deteriorates even more and of course assuming that the hose comes. The stress is building.

We'll post more according to how events occur.
