We are back in Seattle

It feels like home. Of course we are not in Silshole. Maybe we will be, someday, but there is a list and we are on it. In the meantime we are at Bainbridge Island Marina.

The dinghy holds air again

It wasn't very nice of the bear to tear the fabric across a seam. We were worried that we couldn't patch it but tried anyway. The glue had a job to do and it did it!

A Grizzly Bear damaged our dinghy

We were visiting the Anan Bear Observatory south of Wrangell. It is one of the best places to visit in all of SE Alaska BECAUSE it has bears. But (as we learned) there is a dark side to this bear concentration. And of course, there is a story to tell.

Moving On

"No matter where you go, there you are" (unknown reference). By now we have been there and done that. Most recently that included Cannery Cove on Admiralty Island. The photo shows the quiet grandeur of the setting with Ron and Suzie's boat SV Tango in the foreground. It has been like that for the last [...]

We are in Hoonah, SE Alaska now

We got something resembling a high pressure ridge so we moved expeditously across the Gulf of Alaska. The crossing took three days and weather stayed as forecast. That was a very good thing. The weather changes in the far north far more rapidly and dramatically than we ever experienced in the more southern [...]

Crossing the Gulf of Alaska

We are still in Seward, AK. Now that spring has come, why not start south?

750 nm to go

The wind has died and we are motoring. We've been motoring about half the time for the last day. The seas are still rough but not as rough. We are finally getting our sea legs. Karen always gets hers first.

We've been fretting about a squeek that we attributed to the top of the rudder post. We've lubed it with little affect. So I just lubed the steering cables and the pulleys under the binnacle. I cannot say whether his helped yet since we are running the engine and that makes it hard to hear. Hope springs eternal. Anything affecting the rudder on the boat is a king size concern. We are a long way from any help.

We had a good breakfast together this morning. This is the first morning we have done that. We were too tired and sick before. Coffee really does raise the spirits. We tuned in to the local net on ssb this morning and found that we were not alone in the difficulty of adapting to the sea after 6 months ashore.

The other difficulty is adapting to the new computer and the new iridium phone. Both are nice, but I've got files on the old computer that would have helped me use what I have. For example the format for the postings on Sailblogs is not present on this computer. I'm adapting with the crude position report which I will clean up when I get to broadband again. Until then you can go to google earth and post our position to see where we are or just be happy with the distance to go I provide. Basically we are on a straight line between Opua NZ an Savusavu Fiji.
