We are back in Seattle

It feels like home. Of course we are not in Silshole. Maybe we will be, someday, but there is a list and we are on it. In the meantime we are at Bainbridge Island Marina.

The dinghy holds air again

It wasn't very nice of the bear to tear the fabric across a seam. We were worried that we couldn't patch it but tried anyway. The glue had a job to do and it did it!

A Grizzly Bear damaged our dinghy

We were visiting the Anan Bear Observatory south of Wrangell. It is one of the best places to visit in all of SE Alaska BECAUSE it has bears. But (as we learned) there is a dark side to this bear concentration. And of course, there is a story to tell.

Moving On

"No matter where you go, there you are" (unknown reference). By now we have been there and done that. Most recently that included Cannery Cove on Admiralty Island. The photo shows the quiet grandeur of the setting with Ron and Suzie's boat SV Tango in the foreground. It has been like that for the last [...]

We are in Hoonah, SE Alaska now

We got something resembling a high pressure ridge so we moved expeditously across the Gulf of Alaska. The crossing took three days and weather stayed as forecast. That was a very good thing. The weather changes in the far north far more rapidly and dramatically than we ever experienced in the more southern [...]

Crossing the Gulf of Alaska

We are still in Seward, AK. Now that spring has come, why not start south?

As good as it gets

The dive on the great white wall is as good as we imagined it would be. We did it at the exact right time, when all the soft corals were opened up and feeding. Our divemaster prepared us and led us with a coreography that produced a perfect dive for everyone....those who gobble air and those who hardly breathe. The color and the variety of sea life were optimized by diving when the current was just right. Not too strong to manage and not too weak to attract and expand the sea life (for sea life, current equals food). The picture above shows the complexity of the dive route. There are a couple of lava tubes, one we go down through and one we ascend through. The white wall opens up to the divers view as he emerges from he lava tube. It extends downward to 330 feet. It is tempting to wander down it; that would be as ill advised as can be imagined. We descended down our mooring line and ascended on the same line. This makes the safety stop very easy. The second dive was on Jack's reef, and was a maximum depth of 50 feet with a gradual ascent to 15 feet on the last half of the dive. The fish were everywhere and of every kind. Of particular interest was a field of eels in the sand that look like grass but pull back into the sand as you approach. I'm trying to get some pictures from my dive partners.
