We are back in Seattle

It feels like home. Of course we are not in Silshole. Maybe we will be, someday, but there is a list and we are on it. In the meantime we are at Bainbridge Island Marina.

The dinghy holds air again

It wasn't very nice of the bear to tear the fabric across a seam. We were worried that we couldn't patch it but tried anyway. The glue had a job to do and it did it!

A Grizzly Bear damaged our dinghy

We were visiting the Anan Bear Observatory south of Wrangell. It is one of the best places to visit in all of SE Alaska BECAUSE it has bears. But (as we learned) there is a dark side to this bear concentration. And of course, there is a story to tell.

Moving On

"No matter where you go, there you are" (unknown reference). By now we have been there and done that. Most recently that included Cannery Cove on Admiralty Island. The photo shows the quiet grandeur of the setting with Ron and Suzie's boat SV Tango in the foreground. It has been like that for the last [...]

We are in Hoonah, SE Alaska now

We got something resembling a high pressure ridge so we moved expeditously across the Gulf of Alaska. The crossing took three days and weather stayed as forecast. That was a very good thing. The weather changes in the far north far more rapidly and dramatically than we ever experienced in the more southern [...]

Crossing the Gulf of Alaska

We are still in Seward, AK. Now that spring has come, why not start south?

Success and a little credit to the charts

27 June 2013 | North End of Viti Levu
Larry Nelson
Today we rose early and motored in light air west to Viti Levu island and then counterclockwise around the island. There is a reef around the north side of the island that gives a secure passage to the west end of the island. Since that is where the Vuda Point marina is located (where we will leave our boat), we really like discovering this passage. But what about the navigation "rules" for Fiji?. Particularly the one that says you should travel between 10 am and 3 pm on sunny calm days so you can see the coral that obstructs the passages. Well, we've been here since May and I think you can count on one hand the number of days that we could safely move the boat using those rules alone. Today it was overcast and had rain showers. We left early so to pass the shoal obstructed areas during the best possible time but really, we never saw the shoals. We used our electronic charts and waypoints gathered from other cruisers (and Curly from Savusavu). The good news is that the charts ARE pretty good in this part of Fiji and with waypoints to give confidence, navigation worked. There is a whole lot to miss! The passages are convoluted and there are shoals everywhere....but generally not apparent visually. There are spots where waves break, but that depends a lot on the tide. No one can relax on these passages. But tonight we are relaxing at anchor. We barbecued a big steak and ate frozen peas and carrots. We are on a mission to eat the freezer so we can turn it off when we are visiting the Pacific Northwest.

The picture shows Karen with her finger inside a giant clam that is closing. I can report that she still has her finger.
