We are back in Seattle

It feels like home. Of course we are not in Silshole. Maybe we will be, someday, but there is a list and we are on it. In the meantime we are at Bainbridge Island Marina.

The dinghy holds air again

It wasn't very nice of the bear to tear the fabric across a seam. We were worried that we couldn't patch it but tried anyway. The glue had a job to do and it did it!

A Grizzly Bear damaged our dinghy

We were visiting the Anan Bear Observatory south of Wrangell. It is one of the best places to visit in all of SE Alaska BECAUSE it has bears. But (as we learned) there is a dark side to this bear concentration. And of course, there is a story to tell.

Moving On

"No matter where you go, there you are" (unknown reference). By now we have been there and done that. Most recently that included Cannery Cove on Admiralty Island. The photo shows the quiet grandeur of the setting with Ron and Suzie's boat SV Tango in the foreground. It has been like that for the last [...]

We are in Hoonah, SE Alaska now

We got something resembling a high pressure ridge so we moved expeditously across the Gulf of Alaska. The crossing took three days and weather stayed as forecast. That was a very good thing. The weather changes in the far north far more rapidly and dramatically than we ever experienced in the more southern [...]

Crossing the Gulf of Alaska

We are still in Seward, AK. Now that spring has come, why not start south?

Visiting Australia

23 December 2013 | Port Stephens
Larry Nelson
We've left our boat in Opua at the dock and flown to Sidney Australia to visit our friends Barbara and Jim Cole (SV Complexity). Barbara and Jim visited us last year to tour NZ. So now we are visiting them. After a few days at their beautiful beachfront home, we will take their boat south to Sidney from their home in Port Stephens. The center of our visit plan is to see the New Years Eve fireworks in Sidney and to see the start of the Sidney/Hobart race (a world famous race frequented by the best of the best race boats.

The fireworks are planned to be CONSIDERABLY more elaborate than I ever imagined. There is NOT one fireworks barge but SEVEN barges plus the bridge fireworks. And there are two shows, one at 9 pm and another at midnight. In between shows there is a lighted boat parade. Awesome. We have a climb over the Sidney Harbor bridge scheduled for 9:25 am on New Years Day. $250 each ...things aren't cheap here. We also have a tour of the Opera House scheduled for Dec 30. And reservations at Alfredo's for dinner downtown.

We leave Port Stevens for Sidney Christmas afternoon. We will arrive in the morning in plenty of time to see the Sidney/Hobart. Race start at 1 pm.

We will also explore the harbor with the boat. And explore downtown on foot. Apparently there are water taxis to get to and from the boat.

We have lots of food and drink aboard, too.

Christmas Eve dinner will be salmon. Christmas dinner is with the neighbors. I know the menu includes fresh oysters. ..and turkey and ham served cold. Why cold? It's because it is HOT outside. We will dine outside next to the water. I'm sure it will be good.
