We are back in Seattle

It feels like home. Of course we are not in Silshole. Maybe we will be, someday, but there is a list and we are on it. In the meantime we are at Bainbridge Island Marina.

The dinghy holds air again

It wasn't very nice of the bear to tear the fabric across a seam. We were worried that we couldn't patch it but tried anyway. The glue had a job to do and it did it!

A Grizzly Bear damaged our dinghy

We were visiting the Anan Bear Observatory south of Wrangell. It is one of the best places to visit in all of SE Alaska BECAUSE it has bears. But (as we learned) there is a dark side to this bear concentration. And of course, there is a story to tell.

Moving On

"No matter where you go, there you are" (unknown reference). By now we have been there and done that. Most recently that included Cannery Cove on Admiralty Island. The photo shows the quiet grandeur of the setting with Ron and Suzie's boat SV Tango in the foreground. It has been like that for the last [...]

We are in Hoonah, SE Alaska now

We got something resembling a high pressure ridge so we moved expeditously across the Gulf of Alaska. The crossing took three days and weather stayed as forecast. That was a very good thing. The weather changes in the far north far more rapidly and dramatically than we ever experienced in the more southern [...]

Crossing the Gulf of Alaska

We are still in Seward, AK. Now that spring has come, why not start south?

Taking a tour of the Opera House

30 December 2013 | Sidney Harbor, Australia
We have positioned SV Complexity for the best view in all of Sidney of the fireworks. It is a rough bay, so while we wait, we rock and roll.

Today was our day to tour the Sidney Opera House. It's an architectural marvel and a construction and structural engineering wonder. It is positioned perfectly. It is a major reason that Sidney is recognized throughout the world as a tourist destination. They run a whole lot of tours. People on the tours come from all over the world. On the elevator we stood next to a woman in a burka. I hadn't seen this in person before. The burka was black with no trim. Tiny slits gave some air near where a mouth might be. She was escorted by a young man. It may be a cultural norm but it felt to me like subjugation. I was surprised by the strength of my reaction.

Before the tour we went for a hike to the Westfield shopping center. Wow. The beautiful merchandise on display was never ending. Stores were big and beautiful and there were thousands of them. Really. It was overwhelming and wonderous especially considering our recent shopping experiences in Fiji and Tonga. Also, there were literally millions of people. They were fun to watch, too. And there were street shows to watch like in Victoria. It was a beautiful day, warm and sunny. This is indeed a fun city to visit. But, bring lots of money.

I bought a cowhide hat wit a big leather brim all around. It has a genuine crocodile hat band that is festooned with crocodile teeth. Crocodile Dundee would like my hat.
