We are back in Seattle

It feels like home. Of course we are not in Silshole. Maybe we will be, someday, but there is a list and we are on it. In the meantime we are at Bainbridge Island Marina.

The dinghy holds air again

It wasn't very nice of the bear to tear the fabric across a seam. We were worried that we couldn't patch it but tried anyway. The glue had a job to do and it did it!

A Grizzly Bear damaged our dinghy

We were visiting the Anan Bear Observatory south of Wrangell. It is one of the best places to visit in all of SE Alaska BECAUSE it has bears. But (as we learned) there is a dark side to this bear concentration. And of course, there is a story to tell.

Moving On

"No matter where you go, there you are" (unknown reference). By now we have been there and done that. Most recently that included Cannery Cove on Admiralty Island. The photo shows the quiet grandeur of the setting with Ron and Suzie's boat SV Tango in the foreground. It has been like that for the last [...]

We are in Hoonah, SE Alaska now

We got something resembling a high pressure ridge so we moved expeditously across the Gulf of Alaska. The crossing took three days and weather stayed as forecast. That was a very good thing. The weather changes in the far north far more rapidly and dramatically than we ever experienced in the more southern [...]

Crossing the Gulf of Alaska

We are still in Seward, AK. Now that spring has come, why not start south?

Testing the Iridium sailblog update capability

Larry Nelson
We have integrated the Iridium phone with Sailmail and the service is active. We've added an external antenna for the Iridium phone (which makes a huge improvement, though the service is still occasionally sketchy). This update is a test made at the dock. At sea there is an element of faith that the update works since we can't view the internet directly (actually its is possible, just not practical). We can use our telnet via the vodaphone cellular service to check it here at the dock.

This integration of Sailmail with Iridium and Winlink seems to work, but it is not simple. Communications at sea is not simple. Satellite communications is even less simple but when it works it is faster and doesn't upset the autopilot. It is becoming expected that yachts will have internet access. For example, we have to notify Australian customs 96 hours or more before our arrival that we are enroute. The uncertainties of travel can be overcome easily with an email, but they really do want to know. Better to be able to send that email. And then there is the issue of weather ... which in this part of the world is not to be taken lightly. This integration of Iridium with Airmail software makes worldwide weather easily accessible. For backup we have the ssb which can be used if the autopilot is off and steering is done manually or with a wind powered self steering device.

Engineers seem to adapt to all the learning that is required to keep this stuff working. People who were not engineers get their spouse to do it!
