We are back in Seattle

It feels like home. Of course we are not in Silshole. Maybe we will be, someday, but there is a list and we are on it. In the meantime we are at Bainbridge Island Marina.

The dinghy holds air again

It wasn't very nice of the bear to tear the fabric across a seam. We were worried that we couldn't patch it but tried anyway. The glue had a job to do and it did it!

A Grizzly Bear damaged our dinghy

We were visiting the Anan Bear Observatory south of Wrangell. It is one of the best places to visit in all of SE Alaska BECAUSE it has bears. But (as we learned) there is a dark side to this bear concentration. And of course, there is a story to tell.

Moving On

"No matter where you go, there you are" (unknown reference). By now we have been there and done that. Most recently that included Cannery Cove on Admiralty Island. The photo shows the quiet grandeur of the setting with Ron and Suzie's boat SV Tango in the foreground. It has been like that for the last [...]

We are in Hoonah, SE Alaska now

We got something resembling a high pressure ridge so we moved expeditously across the Gulf of Alaska. The crossing took three days and weather stayed as forecast. That was a very good thing. The weather changes in the far north far more rapidly and dramatically than we ever experienced in the more southern [...]

Crossing the Gulf of Alaska

We are still in Seward, AK. Now that spring has come, why not start south?

Cruising Tasmania

11 February 2015 | Hobart, Tasmania
Larry Nelson
Summer arrived in Tasmania about 2 weeks after we arrived. Apparently summer is marked by movement of a high pressure closer to Anarctica and otherwise near to Tasmania. (Like the pacific high that brings summer to Seattle). We took a week to explore the D'Entrecasteaux Channel. That is Tasmania's San Juan Islands. It's beautiful! We went further to Recherché Bay where we got to see Tasmanias old growth forest. It is spectacular. The population density is low so history is preserved. We hiked an old railway used by convicts to move coal to Hobart. You could see where it was even though that was about 150 years ago. We did this with some extra care. The snakes in Tasmania are venomous and there are lots of them. Locals tell us they are more afraid of us than we are of them. I doubt that!

We were after lobster. We found a really beautiful bay, but no lobster. Even though we bought a lobster trap. We only had opportunity to try one spot for one night and we were not lucky. So we bought some! They taste just as good if you buy them! Fresh.

We joined a yacht club, too. That gives us access to mooring buoys placed in good spots in the cruising areas. It's convenient and safe. The buoys are new recently and maintained.

We have a friend, Paul Nelson, flying in and bringing our mail. We will rent a car and do some furious traveling with him.
