We are back in Seattle

It feels like home. Of course we are not in Silshole. Maybe we will be, someday, but there is a list and we are on it. In the meantime we are at Bainbridge Island Marina.

The dinghy holds air again

It wasn't very nice of the bear to tear the fabric across a seam. We were worried that we couldn't patch it but tried anyway. The glue had a job to do and it did it!

A Grizzly Bear damaged our dinghy

We were visiting the Anan Bear Observatory south of Wrangell. It is one of the best places to visit in all of SE Alaska BECAUSE it has bears. But (as we learned) there is a dark side to this bear concentration. And of course, there is a story to tell.

Moving On

"No matter where you go, there you are" (unknown reference). By now we have been there and done that. Most recently that included Cannery Cove on Admiralty Island. The photo shows the quiet grandeur of the setting with Ron and Suzie's boat SV Tango in the foreground. It has been like that for the last [...]

We are in Hoonah, SE Alaska now

We got something resembling a high pressure ridge so we moved expeditously across the Gulf of Alaska. The crossing took three days and weather stayed as forecast. That was a very good thing. The weather changes in the far north far more rapidly and dramatically than we ever experienced in the more southern [...]

Crossing the Gulf of Alaska

We are still in Seward, AK. Now that spring has come, why not start south?

Crew is well.

The crew is well, but worried about fuel. Our present fuel is 115 gallons. Its not real clear how much of that is usable. We are making about 160 nm per day and we have 2.1 days to go to arrive. (336 nm to go) We have a slight headwind (maybe 6 knots, variable). Its a direct headwind. Maximum bad condition. We use about 31.5 gallons per day.

So what are we doing? One of us is sleeping. Right now it is Karen. One of us is standing watch and worrying! I'm going to get the GRIBs again with this iridium access. We had some wind in the forecast, and it was wind on the beam. Just right. So what has happened to that? I point out that we did a dog leg on the route so that we would have good wind angles on arrival. This is a very big ocean which is no place to be thinking about running out of fuel. Just saying ...

Tonight we worked on emptying the refrigerator and freezer of food due to concern that they might take it from us! Last time we were there they did not, but that was arriving from NZ. This time we are arriving from Australia and people tell us that what happens depends on who does the inspecting on arrival. The web site mentions preferential treatment for food from NZ. No mention (good or bad) about Australia. Anyway, we had the most delicious pork chops EVER. I barbecued them and if i do say so, they came out juicy with the fat singed just right. Karen fixed some steamed cabbage to go with them. She does that very well. And we had milk. Cold, fresh milk. Then I took a nap so to enjoy that very fine meal. Think of a happy pig lying in mud. :-)
