We are back in Seattle

It feels like home. Of course we are not in Silshole. Maybe we will be, someday, but there is a list and we are on it. In the meantime we are at Bainbridge Island Marina.

The dinghy holds air again

It wasn't very nice of the bear to tear the fabric across a seam. We were worried that we couldn't patch it but tried anyway. The glue had a job to do and it did it!

A Grizzly Bear damaged our dinghy

We were visiting the Anan Bear Observatory south of Wrangell. It is one of the best places to visit in all of SE Alaska BECAUSE it has bears. But (as we learned) there is a dark side to this bear concentration. And of course, there is a story to tell.

Moving On

"No matter where you go, there you are" (unknown reference). By now we have been there and done that. Most recently that included Cannery Cove on Admiralty Island. The photo shows the quiet grandeur of the setting with Ron and Suzie's boat SV Tango in the foreground. It has been like that for the last [...]

We are in Hoonah, SE Alaska now

We got something resembling a high pressure ridge so we moved expeditously across the Gulf of Alaska. The crossing took three days and weather stayed as forecast. That was a very good thing. The weather changes in the far north far more rapidly and dramatically than we ever experienced in the more southern [...]

Crossing the Gulf of Alaska

We are still in Seward, AK. Now that spring has come, why not start south?

Position Report 4 on Passage From Newcastle, Australia to Noumea, New Caledonia

The photo is of Karen with Bruce and his sons. Bruce is a new Australian friend who kindly lent his car to us while we were waiting for a weather window to depart from Newcastle.

Making 6.8 knots under sail, full main and full jib with heading 053 degrees magnetic.

I just pulled up GRIB files for the next 4 days. That high pressure system is moving in faster than I thought (or else I'm slower, a possibility). In 6 hours our wind will pretty much die, but that is 6 more hours of fuel in the tank for when that happens. I ran the engine this morning when the wind died so our batteries are charged and solar energy is running the boat so were good for electricity. Up to this point in the voyage seas were rough and we were running with only the jib, ...reefed at night. We were making good time but not good enough to stay ahead of the encroaching high pressure. When we turn the corner north of Lord Howe Island, our wind angles will improve by about 30 degrees. That was a great plan until the wind died! 5 knots from the bet angle still isn't a lot of go power.

But the good news is that my seasickness is also ebbing. Yay. Since we will have relatively easy seas tonight and I feel like eating again, Karen is thawing pork chops.

The sun is out and that really raises our spirits. We have a squid on the port side deck aft. No one has suggested eating him although I guess we could. He is about 5 inches long.

The iridium phone is working great. Data rates are wayyy faster than with singlesideband.

Karen is taking a nap now. Tonight should be easy since we will likely be motoring. Seas will go down even further.
