We are back in Seattle

It feels like home. Of course we are not in Silshole. Maybe we will be, someday, but there is a list and we are on it. In the meantime we are at Bainbridge Island Marina.

The dinghy holds air again

It wasn't very nice of the bear to tear the fabric across a seam. We were worried that we couldn't patch it but tried anyway. The glue had a job to do and it did it!

A Grizzly Bear damaged our dinghy

We were visiting the Anan Bear Observatory south of Wrangell. It is one of the best places to visit in all of SE Alaska BECAUSE it has bears. But (as we learned) there is a dark side to this bear concentration. And of course, there is a story to tell.

Moving On

"No matter where you go, there you are" (unknown reference). By now we have been there and done that. Most recently that included Cannery Cove on Admiralty Island. The photo shows the quiet grandeur of the setting with Ron and Suzie's boat SV Tango in the foreground. It has been like that for the last [...]

We are in Hoonah, SE Alaska now

We got something resembling a high pressure ridge so we moved expeditously across the Gulf of Alaska. The crossing took three days and weather stayed as forecast. That was a very good thing. The weather changes in the far north far more rapidly and dramatically than we ever experienced in the more southern [...]

Crossing the Gulf of Alaska

We are still in Seward, AK. Now that spring has come, why not start south?

Passage Notes 18: Running the Gauntlet

07 June 2016 | On passage from Majuro, Marshall Islands to Dutch Harbor, Alaska
Larry
Our position 6 June 14:36hrs is 45d30mN 173d12mW making cog 20T sog 6.5 kts in light wind from east, near gale coming from south west later in the night. motoring now 577nm left to go to Dutch Harbor

One after another, two cargo ships (ie. fast) approached from opposing directions with Panta Rhei directly ahead of each ship. We were moving northeast toward Dutch Harbor, the ships were moving east and west. They were each on a direct collision course with the third vessel, Panta Rhei, shown on AIS only about 10 nm away with incomplete data fields. The ship from the west first, then as Panta Rhei moved north the ship from the east appeared. All this in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. VHF worked clearly to each vessel. I was surprised I didn't see their AIS from further out. Each ship showed up about 10nm out.

We are under power now but the wind looks like it might be time to pull out the jib. We still have a long way to go 577nm actually.

Our jib UV protection sheets are all tearing off making the jib look in tatters. Ugh. I guess they didn't use uv protection thread on the covers! Jib underneath appears strong, I hope. I hope.

Although I worry constantly, the good ship Panta Rhei is actually working quite well. Our heater is working (yea!) and so is the autopilot, thank goodness. It is a truly miserable night outside. Cold, windy, rainy. I'm having a cup of hot tea while on watch.

Scott Hansen reports he is stuck in the elongated Pacific High that we also had to cross. But we have more fuel than he does. He is enroute right now from Honolulu to Sitka! small world.
