Time for a little exploring! We rented a car again and dropped Dizzy off at a very luxurious dog motel! Climate controlled and webcams to watch your dog remotely! He will have a spa day before we return!
The highway 10 is direct to New Orleans but we drove off the highway and took I-90 which is the scenic route to NO. The drive is along the Gulf coast with mile after mile of white sand beaches. Hot, sunny and a light ocean breeze. We stopped at Shaggy's on the Gulf at Pass Christian. It has received the award, "#1 Best Seafood Dive"
And it was delicious. Very fresh tasting, Blackned Mahi Mahi and deep fried fish tacos. Exceptional! The place has a real relaxed atmosphere, windows open with no screens, outside terrace tables and a great breeze. All overlooking the Gulf. Highly recommend!
We continued to NO and Le Richelieu in the French Quarter. David and I stayed there 27 years ago and it has not changed! It is well maintained but an old authentic property. 1.5 blocks to the French Quarter Market and Cafe Du Monde the famous beignet and coffee shop.
We stayed two nights.
The first night we went to Dan Akyroyd's House of Blues for dinner. After checking out the Insane Hurricane specialty drink for me we ordered. Oysters are in season so we had the voodoo oysters. AWESOME! There is a combination of sweet chinese sauce, southern comfort, honey and sesame oil. On top of the oysters on the half shell and broiled. Did I say awesome! 2nd course was lobster mac and cheese that was also amazing. You can't come all this way without dessert so we ordered the triple chocolate cheesecake. I have run out of descriptive words that can do this dinner justice. It was really good. The decor in the restaurant is interesting as there are busts of different musical artists lining the ceiling and lit up 3D.
Our second day we headed straight to Cafe du Monde for beignets and coffee. Just as I remembered them from 27 years ago. We toured the city and headed to Bourbon Street to take in all the live bands. Dinner was Mexican at another delicious place Felipes Taqueria.
New Orleans is an eaters paradise.
We were happy to see that the French Quarter is slowly being refurbished and is very lively. Every night the streets are washed and there is no debris lying around.
Fantastic side trip!!
