Good News-Bad News

Hello to all our yachtie friends, it is so long again since I have posted a blog, but the moment has at last arrived that I can talk to you all.

Home!!

The last lap, so we left Garry’s Anchorage at 5.50am to catch the incoming tide to cross the bar. No wind at all. We started down the “mad mile” towards the bar crossing – not for the faint hearted today, it was like a washing machine, however the largest wave we saw was about 3 metres. Finally [...]

Yankee Jack Creek

Off yet again at 5.45 am, I was almost sleepwalking as the skipper did his usual, go, go, now.........

Nearly Home

We had a lovely quiet day in the creek, we even played cards and Scrabble, beaten again!!!

27 October 2011 | Pancake Creek

Dawn Start

Up at 4.30am [we must be mad]! To get to Pancake Creek before tomorrow, when a S Easter is forecast, means a very long haul today. We will pass Cape Capricorn at about 10am before sailing down the outside of Curtis Island and Gladstone etc.

Another Ripper!!

Another day, this time up at 5am and underway at 5.40am. The water is like oil, not a breath of wind. The clouds are quite heavy at present, but it is very early yet.

Markets

Yesterday we went to the markets - on the backs of motorbikes which is the normal mode of transport here as there are not so many bemo's as Kupang and there is not a route from the anchorage to the markets about 4 Km away. The markets are very extensive and the huge range and size of fresh fish available amazed us. We saw potatoes (unheard of in PNG and Solomons) lots of cabbage and other greens. We got lovely avocadoes and white peppers (these are the Spice Islands after all). The eggs are quite small. We are learning to bargain in Bahasa although I am sure we pay three time what the locals do - but it is still pretty cheap - the avocados were less than 20 cents. All the produce was very fresh and definitely organic/free range.
The rest of the fleet is starting to arrive and there are now about 25 boats here - we were lucky to have a couple of days with only the 4 boats here. Off to Sunday lunch today with Sandpiper and Kristiane - other will probably join us at the local restaurant (the only one) Nasi (rice) or Mei (noodles) Goreng (fried) with Ayam (chicken) costs $2 and the big Bintang Beers $4 all sitting under gazebos at the water's edge.
Remarkably the local TV station is using the Australian feed from Beijing so we watched the opening ceremony live in English and we get a few hours coverage each evening.
