Good News-Bad News

Hello to all our yachtie friends, it is so long again since I have posted a blog, but the moment has at last arrived that I can talk to you all.

Home!!

The last lap, so we left Garry’s Anchorage at 5.50am to catch the incoming tide to cross the bar. No wind at all. We started down the “mad mile” towards the bar crossing – not for the faint hearted today, it was like a washing machine, however the largest wave we saw was about 3 metres. Finally [...]

Yankee Jack Creek

Off yet again at 5.45 am, I was almost sleepwalking as the skipper did his usual, go, go, now.........

Nearly Home

We had a lovely quiet day in the creek, we even played cards and Scrabble, beaten again!!!

27 October 2011 | Pancake Creek

Dawn Start

Up at 4.30am [we must be mad]! To get to Pancake Creek before tomorrow, when a S Easter is forecast, means a very long haul today. We will pass Cape Capricorn at about 10am before sailing down the outside of Curtis Island and Gladstone etc.

Another Ripper!!

Another day, this time up at 5am and underway at 5.40am. The water is like oil, not a breath of wind. The clouds are quite heavy at present, but it is very early yet.

Good Friday

Nanette
Underway at 7.45am, a lovely breeze 14kts true, 18kts over the sails, we are moving------yes at 8 to 9 kts. 50 miles to Lanta where we will overnight. It is so good to be afloat and have breeze with us. A good sail!! It is now the 3rd and we had a ten minute sail before getting caught in a fishing net stretched out for about 200 mtrs, but with only one buoy marking it. This usually means just a trap under the buoy, but no just under the surface were a row of tiny white floats attached to a fine gill net. We were held fast by the top line, so we spent a long time trying to free it all to no avail. Finally we had to cut that line and we were free. This is sad for the fisherman, but he should have proper floats that are visible!!!
The rest of the 60 miles to Tarutao we saw hundreds of bits of styrene foam and plastic bottles all attached to traps below, some have a tiny flag or bit of black plastic to show the position. We are supposed to see all these and miss them. This is not easy in any chop at all!! We managed to avoid all these and arrived at Tarutao to anchor down at 5pm. We were totally tired from watching every foot of water all day long. A nice quiet anchorage for the night, no one else at all.
