Fiji at last
24 August 2017
When I awoke this morning we were already within sight of land which was the long awaited Fiji. It has taken us more than two days longer than planned due to the extreme lack of wind and also the extreme lack of an engine. We came inside the reef then had to continue for another 25 miles up the coast, which at sailing speed means 5+ hours. When we were about 2 miles away from the marina the skipper called another boat that we were following in, to ask for assistance and for a tow because of us being unable to manoeuvre using just the sail power alone, but we were advised to anchor just outside. It was a good job also because the marina was chocka block with multi multi million dollar vessels. The mountains in the distance look so rugged and inviting, Fiji doesn’t seem to have any sort of mountain biking facilities which in my eyes is tragic, maybe there is a business opportunity here?

Time to leave the boat.
This morning it was time to leave the boat, Ruud helped me load my 3 large heavy bags into the little dingy and we motored into the marina. We said our goodbyes, I then made a couple of enquiries and then caught a taxi to the Nadi Bay resort hotel, a slightly run down establishment but clean and tidy and the food was much better than the last 8 weeks of self-catering. Most of the day I was sorting my kit out ready to send it back to the UK for my next boat in November. I am going to have an early night I think

I got up around 08.30 had a shower and went for breakfast, pretty much as much as I can eat and it was just lush with toast, fresh fruits, pancakes, coffee and fruit juice. I met another young lady from the UK who is again travelling on her own around the world (I’m not too sure how many I have met now but I think it is 5 or 6) she is just about to fly back to Bristol via Sydney so we didn’t get to chat for very long but her journey sounded fantastic, over her time she has filled 5 rather large diaries. I asked her if she did a blog and she said she didn’t like them (something about not being personal). Back to the room for me and then a taxi ride down to FedEx for a box, the driver who brought me back to the hotel hung around until I had packed my kit then helped me to take it back for customs to inspect then cling film it together. So now my kit is on its way back to the UK and I’m much lighter to explore for the next few weeks.
