Walk or jump? or both?
01 September 2017 | Sky Tower, Auckland, New Zealand
This morning Sunny drove me in to Auckland and dropped me off. I walked to the Sky Tower which is the highest tower in the southern hemisphere where you can do a couple of pretty different activities. Those being the ‘sky jump’ from a certified height of 192m above the ground. And the ‘sky walk’ which is a walk around the external circumference of the tower, again 192m above the ground. I decided to do both of them. Firstly I did the walk. Before you can do either, you have to empty all pockets and take watches and jewellery off, then we had to put a daft looking jump suit on and also a harness. I did it with 1 other person that being a very nice lady from Mexico called Ivanny Ramos, who was celebrating her birthday, she showed no fear as we walked round the tower doing 5 different confidence tasks, the track is 1.2m wide without any handrails, and we were strapped to an overhead rail. The tasks all involved leaning out over the track and looking straight down or looking up whilst walking both forwards and backwards. Then we went and had a burger for our lunch which was rather rushed, so we had to grab a take away bag, because if we were late for the jump then we could have lost our place and also our money. The jump is classed as a tethered base jump due to the fact that we were connected to a pair of vertical cables we got about 11 seconds of free fall before the arrestor kicks in and slows us down about 10m above the landing platform. Of the two I preferred the walk mainly because of the great views of the surrounding countryside which included no less than 8 extinct volcanoes also the views over the city, docks and marinas were very good. After the two activities we then had a free pass (normally about $30 NZD) back up to both observation decks at level 53 and 60, both of these are fully enclosed with glass. When we came back down Ivanny and I went and had another coffee at the bottom of the tower. I enjoyed her company and it made a very pleasant change to chat to someone else. We have also said that we will meet up tomorrow again for a coffee and maybe take a look around the city together. I caught the bus back out to Sunny’s home which took about 40 minutes. I am now rather tired.
