Big waves and whales

Through the night and during my watch we had 3 to 4 metre waves rolling in from behind, made worse by a wind of 28 knots gusting to 35, making the boat ⛵️pitch and roll around all over the place, the cockpit was swamped by some of the bigger waves coming in over the rather low transom, it was also [...]

What a fall

05 September 2017 | Bridal veil waterfall, New Zealand
Again another long drive across from the East coast to the West coast, although to be honest it is not that far. Again we were well entertained by Ninja our tour guide. Did you know that the cattle trade is bigger than the sheep trade now? There are approximately 3.3 million people 🚶 against 8.1 cattle 🐮 and 31 million sheep 🐑 as we drove along the fields seemed empty then there would be one that was so rammed with cattle you would wonder what was going on, but they move them on from small field to small field in order to keep the land more fertile, the fields do seem a more vivid green here than in the UK 🇬🇧. When we got to Raglan (surfing city/village in NZ) we got our kit sorted, our rooms are the highest position up the cliff side climbing about 40 steps along rickety old walkways. One of our group had a bad fall and cut open her knees, shins and toe, so I stepped in and gave her some of my precious plasters. Whilst one of us went for a surfing lesson the rest went to a water fall called 'Wairēinga/ Bridal Veil falls' it was a bit of a drive and hike but soo well worth it. We started walking along the path and came to the first of four viewing points which looked down to the side, what a view. It was 55 metres high and went straight over the edge to the bottom without passing go. At the bottom the pool looked good enough to swim in but it was advised not to due to the apparent cattle run off ☹️. Down here there was a small cairn (rock balancing) built just at the side of the pool. So it was back off to the top, all 261 steep steps ( OCD kicking in here again) I was the only one of us to Carry on to the top of the falls and look directly down, I think it was worth the extra bit of effort. On our way back we went to the local surfing beach, where we had a rugby 🏉 ball kick around. There was a couple of people doing some large sand drawings, when I stopped and chatted and it turned out he was the one who built the cairn at the waterfall. As it went dark 4 of us went up to one of the commune rooms and had a rather relaxing Yoga session for an hour. I then was the only person to take advantage of the lovely sauna, whilst the others all sat around the TVs 📺. Bed at 10.
