Stop monkeying around
19 January 2018
Today I am going to the far side of the island ๐ด to the wild life reserve. It is a longish bus ride but for less than 60 pence I think ๐ค it will be worth it. I have already been that way on just for the jolly, which is where I first saw the gates to the reserve and decided to take the trip there today.
Whilst waiting at the bus station a whole load of school children ๐ถ came in. on the island ๐ด there are 22 secondary schools, each and every one has their own uniform, every child ๐ง was so well turned out it was an impressive sight, there also didn't seem to be any rivalry between each other.
The wild life reserve was ok, the outpost was a little disappointing for me it says " round the island views" but the trees ๐ณ prevented me from all but a small view of the Atlantic. Whilst wandering around the very slippery when wet pathways I came across the small cave system which proclaims "you have just successfully passed through a fruit bat ๐ฆ colony " well I went back and saw no such thing (maybe they were on holiday) so they must have been very deep within the cracks. Whilst walking ๐ถโโ๏ธ I was surprised ๐ฎ to see 4 of the green monkeys ๐ walking towards me, so I stood still and got my camera ready, straight away two of them jumped up and started to root around my backpack ๐, I think they could smell the orange ๐ that I had for my lunch, the male managed to open the small pouch, but failed with the main one due to the carabiner holding both zippers together. He was rather put out I think ๐ค.
After my lunch ๐ฅ I then went on to the other side of the reserve where the other animals we're kept behind a very very long fence ( almost as if they were allowed to be free with out restraint). In this area there were many many tortoises, they looked like they were stuck within the root systems and unable to climb over the top (John can they go in reverse?) there were also quite a few deer ๐ฆ and peacocks. Further round there were plenty of caged parrots, macaws and budgies. Also around 10 snakes but no sign (as advertised) of the 20+ foot reticulated python ๐ that I would have very much liked to have seen. At 14:00 one of the staff came past me with a wheelbarrow brimming full with watermelon, oranges, apples and other vegetables, he just dumped it all in one place, all of the creatures then appeared and the banquet started, the monkeys ๐ were first in closely followed by the deer, then the tortoises that were able, I and another (American) chap released a few tortoise that seemed to us to be stuck, the free ones were so quick and were using the pathways. The baby monkeys ๐ต were so funny eating the water melons. When I had had enough I walked back to the road and waited for my 60 pence (anywhere on the island ๐ด) back to Bridgetown. The best day on the island ๐ด of Barbados ๐ง๐ง up to now.
