Percé and Baie de Chaleur
24 June 2013 | Chandler, PQ
Sunny, warm
It has always been a favorite place, even though I've only been there twice before, it's a Canadian icon, one of the most photographed chunks of rock in the world, yesterday we sailed around Rocher Percé, and it was awesome.
We travelled from Gaspé to L'Anse a Beaufils, the closest safe port to Percé, on Sunday. Notice I said travelled, not sailed... The wind, once again, deserted us and we motored, as I am this morning en route to Chandler. I had hopes of a nice beam reach once we rounded Cap d'Espoir, instead the wind died completely and Baie de Chaleur was like glass....
Saw dolphins, a minke whale and some seals. The lobster season is in full swing on this coast, there were dozens of boats out setting hauling traps this morning. You have to keep a sharp lookout for floats to avoid getting tangled, generally the lobster traps are in less than 75 feet of water so traveling a bit offshore avoids them. This morning, however, we encountered floating nets. The floats are the same as the lobster traps, however they are close together in an irregular line and are joined by small, black floats that are very hard to see. The must be fishing for something else in this area.
Oh, and the pumpout in Chandler is out of service, go figure.
