2014 #12

Wednesday we headed north on the Alligator River, aiming for the Virginia Cut of the ICW. But first......as we turn north onto the river, we are met with strong north winds, in the 20-27 range, making for a rather bumpy ride. Another boat, well ahead, radioed back that the Albemarle Sound was ‘not [...]

2014 #11

Another spell of unpleasant weather was being forecast, and not wanting to be stuck in Myrtle Beach, we again hopped outside and went from Winyah Bay north to Southport, NC. Rain and wind coming - time for another marina. One day to walk around the town with the azaleas and dogwoods blooming, one rainy [...]

2014 #10

We had wanted to spend a few days in Charleston, but marina space would not allow it. So after one night at anchor, not in the main Charleston harbor, we hit the ICW to head north. Saturday, April 12, we traveled from Charleston to Winyah Bay on the ICW. Became reacquainted with the shallows of several [...]

2014 #9 St Augustine-Charleston

A few days in St. Augustine stretched into almost a week at Rivers Edge Marina. Not super fancy, but very close to a lot of things, and very friendly. With friends nearby from Belum, Shearwater, and Sequence, our social calendar was not lacking. We managed to attend a Rhythm and Ribs Festival (great [...]

2014 #8 USA Again

We did our homeward-bound crossing that Wednesday and arrived in Lake Worth/Palm Beach, FL, Thursday morning, March 20. An uneventful, calm, motoring trip of 28+ hours. A day and a half to rest, recuperate, clean fuel filters, and on Saturday morning we headed back out to go north to Fort Pierce, which [...]

2014 #7 George Town to Nassau

We moved north through the Exumas and, of course, had to find a spot to protect us from some coming strong west winds. We did a tour through an area called Pipe Creek, about which everyone raves. We agree it was beautiful, but yikes, the pressure to stay in the deep areas, don’t anchor in the channel, [...]

2013 - #2

26 October 2013
We finished all our tasks in River Dunes and pulled out Thursday morning. Easy trip down to the Beaufort area. While still underway, about 1:30PM Cathy checked the weather forecasts for the next couple days for the next few geographic areas. Wow, the weather looked right for leaving Beaufort Friday morning and going offshore to Wrightsville, NC. Therefore, let’s pull into Beaufort Docks, pay for one more day, go to a good restaurant to celebrate our upcoming anniversary, and leave Friday morning. Proceed according to plan. Pull in, tie up, pay, walk around town and determine the restaurant, make reservations. Let’s check weather again. Yep, it had changed, making Friday a bit more raucous than we prefer. But Saturday looked good. So we ended up in Beaufort 2 nights. The restaurant was good!
Today, Saturday, we did get to follow our plan. Left our slip about 7:15AM, went out the Beaufort inlet, and set sail. And we had a great sail for most of the day. Northwest winds, 10-15 knots, not much wave action. It was great. Even though we were playing dodg’em with 4 military vessels participating in maneuvers. We met our outside mark about 5:30 PM and were anchored by 6PM in time to watch the sunset. Can we have a few more of these?
If we can do it, tomorrow, Sunday, we will go down the ICW to the Southport/Bald Head area, continue out the Bald Head inlet, turn south, and go overnight to Charleston. We don’t think it will be as good sailing as we had today, but we will knock off about 4 days of travel time in 1 1/2 days. Stay tuned; there are lots of weather forecasts that can change in the next hours.
P.S. No picture this time. Not only have I not taken any, I need to learn how to put a caption on a photo using Apple.
