2014 #12

Wednesday we headed north on the Alligator River, aiming for the Virginia Cut of the ICW. But first......as we turn north onto the river, we are met with strong north winds, in the 20-27 range, making for a rather bumpy ride. Another boat, well ahead, radioed back that the Albemarle Sound was ‘not [...]

2014 #11

Another spell of unpleasant weather was being forecast, and not wanting to be stuck in Myrtle Beach, we again hopped outside and went from Winyah Bay north to Southport, NC. Rain and wind coming - time for another marina. One day to walk around the town with the azaleas and dogwoods blooming, one rainy [...]

2014 #10

We had wanted to spend a few days in Charleston, but marina space would not allow it. So after one night at anchor, not in the main Charleston harbor, we hit the ICW to head north. Saturday, April 12, we traveled from Charleston to Winyah Bay on the ICW. Became reacquainted with the shallows of several [...]

2014 #9 St Augustine-Charleston

A few days in St. Augustine stretched into almost a week at Rivers Edge Marina. Not super fancy, but very close to a lot of things, and very friendly. With friends nearby from Belum, Shearwater, and Sequence, our social calendar was not lacking. We managed to attend a Rhythm and Ribs Festival (great [...]

2014 #8 USA Again

We did our homeward-bound crossing that Wednesday and arrived in Lake Worth/Palm Beach, FL, Thursday morning, March 20. An uneventful, calm, motoring trip of 28+ hours. A day and a half to rest, recuperate, clean fuel filters, and on Saturday morning we headed back out to go north to Fort Pierce, which [...]

2014 #7 George Town to Nassau

We moved north through the Exumas and, of course, had to find a spot to protect us from some coming strong west winds. We did a tour through an area called Pipe Creek, about which everyone raves. We agree it was beautiful, but yikes, the pressure to stay in the deep areas, don’t anchor in the channel, [...]

After Christmas in the Miami area, we hung around for a few more days because of rain and, guess what, winds! Finally on Dec. 29, we kicked off and moved south thru Biscayne Bay on the ICW; we stopped the first day after a short run. Then on Dec 30, we jumped outside into the Hawk Channel, and did a long day that ended in Marathon, Fl. One section that we passed through had crab pots that put the Chesapeake to shame. Dodge left, now right, now left!!!
We had made arrangements for a marina slip in Marathon, having determined ahead of arrival that the City Marina mooring field was full, full, full! A slip with side docks, electric hook-up, available showers, and laundry room was appreciated. During our stay at the marina, we walked to the City Marina and got on their waiting list for a mooring. So on Jan 2, we left the slip, took an anchorage we did not like, and within an hour the City Marina called to say a mooring was available. Praise be!
And here we have been since then. Safely tied to a mooring. The City Marina has undergone quite a face-lift since we were here in 2007. Many more showers, better laundry room, great lending library, TV viewing sections., not to mention about 170 more moorings!
As the north has been suffering from REALLY cold and snow, we have been suffering from cold and a lot of high winds. Granted - moorings are not fail-safe, but they are much more mentally-calming in the face of 20-30 knot winds. We had to dig out the jeans and sweatshirts that we had just packed away. I know, big deal!
Now the time has come to move on. Sunday, Jan. 26, we are planning to take off for Bimini Island, the Bahamas. Weather windows so far have been short, have worked for some people, but this weekend we think we will have about 3 days of light winds which should make for a calm crossing.
Here in Florida these blog postings have been done when there was something to report or when we thought it was time. Now we will also have to factor in `internet availability'. Be prepared for even longer intervals.
Sunday - 10:10AM It's a GO!
