2014 #12

Wednesday we headed north on the Alligator River, aiming for the Virginia Cut of the ICW. But first......as we turn north onto the river, we are met with strong north winds, in the 20-27 range, making for a rather bumpy ride. Another boat, well ahead, radioed back that the Albemarle Sound was ‘not [...]

2014 #11

Another spell of unpleasant weather was being forecast, and not wanting to be stuck in Myrtle Beach, we again hopped outside and went from Winyah Bay north to Southport, NC. Rain and wind coming - time for another marina. One day to walk around the town with the azaleas and dogwoods blooming, one rainy [...]

2014 #10

We had wanted to spend a few days in Charleston, but marina space would not allow it. So after one night at anchor, not in the main Charleston harbor, we hit the ICW to head north. Saturday, April 12, we traveled from Charleston to Winyah Bay on the ICW. Became reacquainted with the shallows of several [...]

2014 #9 St Augustine-Charleston

A few days in St. Augustine stretched into almost a week at Rivers Edge Marina. Not super fancy, but very close to a lot of things, and very friendly. With friends nearby from Belum, Shearwater, and Sequence, our social calendar was not lacking. We managed to attend a Rhythm and Ribs Festival (great [...]

2014 #8 USA Again

We did our homeward-bound crossing that Wednesday and arrived in Lake Worth/Palm Beach, FL, Thursday morning, March 20. An uneventful, calm, motoring trip of 28+ hours. A day and a half to rest, recuperate, clean fuel filters, and on Saturday morning we headed back out to go north to Fort Pierce, which [...]

2014 #7 George Town to Nassau

We moved north through the Exumas and, of course, had to find a spot to protect us from some coming strong west winds. We did a tour through an area called Pipe Creek, about which everyone raves. We agree it was beautiful, but yikes, the pressure to stay in the deep areas, don’t anchor in the channel, [...]

That tearing sound you thought you heard was us pulling away from Vero Beach (remember, we said it was Velcro Beach?). We really did nothing significant in the remaining days, but visited with friends and showed Warrick & Wendy some of the corners of Vero Beach. But on Sunday, after waiting out rain, we finally dropped the mooring line and headed south toward Fort Pierce. For those who know, yes it was a very short distance, but it prepped us to head `outside' on Monday and head toward Lake Worth, usually a two day trip on the inside ICW.
So, Monday we did head outside and made it to Lake Worth. Our autopilot malfunctioned at the beginning of the trip and we had to hand-steer the boat the entire distance. With N, NNW 15 knot winds all the way. We finally anchored just inside the inlet at 3:15 Monday afternoon. Plans to leave at 5:45AM Tuesday morning had to be scuttled that morning when there was a problem with the steering. We stayed at anchor and Tom crawled into one of the cockpit lockers and found that the autopilot drive unit had lost a `key' which 1) incapacitated the autopilot on Monday and 2) caused the steering hesitation on Tuesday. Several hours later, after removing numerous bolts, rebedding the found `key', resealing bolts, and heavens knows what else, we declared it ready for Wednesday. Believe me, prayers were said Tuesday night!
Wednesday, we headed out. The autopilot worked! The steering did not hesitate! It was a very pleasant day! About 15 knots of wind all day, NW as we headed south, of course increasing as we neared our destination. We would love to say we sailed, but we didn't - we motor sailed! Found that closer to shore actually gave us a current boost. Again,we had raised anchor at 5:45 AM (yes, it was very dark), and by 3:15 we were entering the Miami, FL, entrance channel. A long trip in, waiting for a railroad bridge to reopen, checking out several anchorage areas....we were finally anchored again by 4:45PM in what is known as the Venetian Island area of Miami. And here we are! Note the Miami skyline as we entered.
