Half way to St. Helena
18 April 2017
It has been a long week and one day from Cape Town with a mixture of fog, high winds, breaking seas, and little wind. We have yet to see the 15 to 20 knot trade winds. The wind speed instrument did not work during the high wind period but probably there was 30 knots much of the time and gusting higher. During the four day period when the winds were highest there were cross seas coming from the southeast and southwest sometimes creating wave peaks much higher than the surrounding sea. Waves were in the vicinity of 5 to 6 metres. Night watches are very cold and I usually have 5 or 6 layers of clothing under an offshore rain suit. Outlook for the second half of the passage to St. Helena looks more pleasurable. Our constant companions are the sea birds hunting for fish around our boat. Other than these birds we have seen dolphins once and a few freighters.
