07/26/2012, On passage from Nuku Hiva to Ahe
Just before leaving Nuku Hiva we saw five gigantic rays passing Petite Ourse. Tonight there was a very red sky at sunset. We have 480 nautical miles to go.

We are now waiting for some good winds for passage and arrival in Tuamotus. Dominique's foot is much improved and she is now able to walk without the rigid boot.
Photographs of the passage and Hiva Oa have been posted in the gallery.

Petite Ourse is anchored in Taiohae Bay along with about two dozen other sailboats. The anchorage is quite rolly and the town of 1500 people is very quiet. This is the administrative centre of the Marquesas. We have yet to get to buy a baquette as they are usually sold out by 7:30 when we are just starting breakfast on the boat. We bought some tuna at the quay and this was fresh and delicious on the barbecue.
Thanks everybody for your comments on the blog.

After three nights at Ivaiva Nui we sailed and motored about 15 miles to northwest end of Hiva Oa and anchored in Hanmenu Bay, The bay is a mini fiord with 100 metre cliffs on both sides of the bay ending in a sand beach with a small village and coconut plantation. There are two other boats in the anchorage with us. As with all anchorages so far, it is rolly.

We are anchored in the bay of Ivaiva on the island of Tahuata with three other boats. The
water is very clear here - we can see the bottom 30 feet (10 metres) deep. There is a white
coral beach inhabited by nonos (ferocious Marquesan biting insect) during the daytime.
There is a coconut and fruit trees ashore whith a couple of uninhabited houses. The bay is
open to the west so there are great sunsets with green flashes.
