Neiafu

17 July 2013 | Tonga
Richard
We arrived at Neiafu, a town of 6,000, on Friday at 4 pm and were able to partially clear in with customs and quarantine. Immigration and health were accomplished on the following Monday and Tuesday. Charges for quarantine were $23.50 tongan dollars and for health $100 tongan dollars which totals about $75 Canadian dollars.
As usual we arrived on a beautiful sunny day and then the weather goes downhill rapidly. The weekend saw torrential rainfalls the most we've seen since we started the trip and now Wednesday we have strong winds but at least the sun is back. Strong winds are to persist until the end of the week. The temperature ranges from 24 to 26C which feels cool when there is no sun. We have blankets on at night for the first time we have been on the Pacific.
We are moored along with a large contigent of New Zealand and Australian sailboats with a few Canadian, a bit more American, single boats from Finland , Spain, and Germany and of course charter boat fleets of Moorings and Sunsail. We are getting our awning repaired by Seams to Me, a Canadian from Sudbury and our main fridge problem will hopefully be repaired by the expat company Trouble in Paradise. This morning a local sailboat began to sink and was soon boarded by the local and sailing community and bailed by pail until a gas powered pump arrived. Everything ended well with the boat saved but with a major cleaning job.
Food supply variety is limited. But there is good bakery with Italian bread, panini, baquettes, and a variety of cakes. The market has pineapple, papaya, passion fruit, mandarin, bananas, local vegetables and edible fresh seaweed. The supply boat came in today and now there is a relative abundance of such items as cheese, and frozen meats.

The passage from Mayotte to Richards Bay, South Africa was about 1200 nautical miles but took 33 days as we sought refuge anchorage in two Mozambique locations at Bazaruto Island and Inhaca Island (both of these islands are national parks)
