Makongai

30 September 2013 | Fiji
Richard
We have been anchored in one of the bays of Makongai Island for the last couple of days. Up to 1969, the island was a leper colony.Last night we, along with 4 other cruising boats, went ashore for a kava ceremony and dancing by the local children. The photo shows the boys doing a warrior dance done before going into battle. The villagers stage these dances to obtain money to send the kids to the mainland (the biggest island of Fiji) as many have never been off the island since they were born. Kava is a root of a pepper type plant which is ground to make a mild intoxicating drink. The island supports two Fijan villages with a total population of 87 plus an additional small Indian village. There is no internet, television, computers and they have electricity only 3 hours in the morning and 3 hours at night. The families here are large. The chief of one of the villages has 12 children and 24 grandchildren.

The passage from Mayotte to Richards Bay, South Africa was about 1200 nautical miles but took 33 days as we sought refuge anchorage in two Mozambique locations at Bazaruto Island and Inhaca Island (both of these islands are national parks)
