Inclement Weather

19 January 2014 | Opua, New Zealand
We are indoors today as there is rain and gusty winds from the remnants of cyclone June as it travels southward over New Zealand. This stopped our work on varnishing the wood in the cockpit of Petite Ourse. Depending on how long it lasts, the wood may require another sanding as we weren't even able to get on a sealing coat before the rain arrived.

The satellite photograph shows the ex-tropical low to the north and west of us at about 4 pm local time. (The cross indicates our position and the purple line our passage route from Fiji.)

According to the forecast for our area (see below) we might expect yet to get some higher winds although Opua seems to quite sheltered from the open coast. So far winds hit a high average of about 20 knots with a few gusts to 30 knots but at the moment at 5:30 pm the wind is 4 knots from the north. It is has been raining, fairly hard at times, off and on.

*** GALE WARNING IN FORCE ***
Northeast 35 knots rising to northwest 45 knots in the morning. Changing southwest 45 knots in the afternoon, then easing to 20 knots Tuesday night. Sea becoming high for a time. Northerly swell rising to 4 metres for a time. Poor visibility in rain, easing Tuesday morning.

Coastal Situation

Issued at: 04:49pm Monday 20-Jan-2014

A sub-tropical low, formerly cyclone June, is expected to cross the North Island during Tuesday and should lie southeast of the Chatham Islands late Wednesday. A disturbed southwest flow is expected to spread across New Zealand on Wednesday, followed by a ridge of high pressure on Friday.

The passage from Mayotte to Richards Bay, South Africa was about 1200 nautical miles but took 33 days as we sought refuge anchorage in two Mozambique locations at Bazaruto Island and Inhaca Island (both of these islands are national parks)
