Dragons and Things

On the island of Rinca, we anchored on the west side and north side. On the west side we spent two days in a calm beautiful anchorage with mountainous Komodo Island as a backdrop. We saw various groups of monkeys (macaque) come down to the beach for fun and arguments in the water. On the last day, a wild boar came down to the beach and was eventually chased away by one of the monkeys. At the ranger station at the north end of the island we saw the dragons, water buffalo and deer. Here you pay for everything park permit, taxes, guide, anchorage which adds up to about 65 dollars for us two. Our guide was quite good. He regaled us with tales of the dangerous dragon which we believe in most cases to be true. The station was continuously visited by Indonesian tourist boats during the day but the anchorage at night was calm and quiet.
Tonight we are anchored off a beach in nice clear water on the north end of Komodo Island. For the first time in awhile we are with other sailboats - one from Finland and one French. The savanna hills tower over us in the anchorage. Everything is very dry on land with rains eventually coming in December.
