What a day!
27 August 2012 | Leonidhion, Kiparissi, Ieraka and Momevasia, Peloponese
Leonidhion is a village with pretty much only a breakwater, but a really dramatic backdrop. Didnt realise the Peloponese were so beautiful. Met half dutch, half English couple Hank and Christine. Stay marred slightly by influx of massive noisy flotilla.
We loved Ieraka. Pretty inlet around a dogleg dramatic coast with an inland lake. Ruined acropolis on the headland (rocks really!)Cave to swim or dinghy into. Stalagtites agogo.
So our day started off in the cave; sailed five miles past the incredible and massive rock isthmus of the Momevasia which has a beautiful Kastro (walled town) on the side of the rock and into a port/bay full of tutles. One particularly large one (4 ft long) and four others. Spent hours watching them.
At midnight there was a kerfuffle and the coastguard brought in a tiny yacht (30 ft max) with we counted 60 people onboard. It was barely afloat and there were old people as well as babies. They had been at sea for five days. The Greeks were kind but it was a really humbling experience. We moan about things sometimes but when you see the desperation on those people's faces and think about the lives they are running away from its very sad. We are so lucky!!! seems v strange now with just the empty yacht next to us.
Met Carol and Neil from Marmaris. Meltemi now so hunkered down for next two days. Just have to watch the turtles. How do they sleep btw?
