One day shorts, the next fleeces
21 October 2010 | Around and about Gallura
Tuesday - Thursday 19th October
Getting used to saying "Salve" instead of "Hola!" (brings back all too vivid memories of latin 'O'Level class with a dragon teacher lady "Salve Puellae - Salvete Magistra!")
Ventured into the hinterland of Sardinia to Nouro (and the Monte de Ortebana) then Bitti, Onani, up to Tempio Pausania and Aggius. Upholds my pantheist leanings - it has such magnificent scenery.
From 5000ft high craggy (Mordor like) mountains often with towns perched atop some of the smaller peaks to forests and forests of cork oaks (with their red decorked trunks) and pines to "the valley of the moon" to rolling hills and massive glacial (?) plains. Its lovely. There are many nuraghe (megalithic structures), villages made from black granite and springs and waterfalls. Aggius was favourite - quaint village nestling under huge rocks. Only issue with visiting this time of the year is that not much is open. Had to head back to Olbia for a pizza. There was a revelation too. We thought Olbia was small but its massive further inland....
