Across the boot
11 June 2011 | Rocella Ionica - Mainland Italy
Thursday 9th June - Saturday 11th June
Left Mt Etna at daybreak. 73 miles from Taormina across the Messina Straits again and past the toe of Italy to Rocella Ionica.
Long good sailing day with three separate dolphin pods playng bowriders. Little ones for a change, only about 5 ft long but very playful.
Slightly nerve wracking, very shallow in places, entrance to Marina at Rocella. Dodging a wreck on one side and a doglegged sandbank on the other, but definitely worth it. Good sheltered marina only 20 Euros a night (no matter what size of boat, but no leccie. word must have got around France cos its full of french) Great Pizzeria onsite serving half or a metre of pizza. Cats glad to get off for a few days.... Free bikes at the marina and a lovely long prom along the seafront with a beautiful white sand beach and no people. Cycled 10 miles to go and buy a new fishing rod and some lures..... Martyn mislaid his bike. (first his boat then his bike) It had blown into the marina...whoops.
