Fishing Streak

24 July 2012 | Harbor Island
Alec Morwood-Portoles
Our fishing streak started last night on Monday July 23 [Our second day at Harbor Island]. In the evening we decided to try to fish off the boat. We got 2 of the rods ready, one of them was equipped with a sabiki [A monofilament line with 6 small hooks with colorful beads and sparkly things to attract fish and a 2 ounce weight on the end] and the other equipped with a yellow and black lure. Mark dropped the rod with the sabiki on it and let it out a little so it would be near the bottom, a few seconds later he felt a bunch of bites on his fishing and then it bent and he started fighting the fish. He reeled the fish up to the surface there were two of them, suddenly one of the fish got off the hooks and swam away! He reeled the fish up onto the boat and awkwardly dropped them into a bucket full of salt water. We identified it as a Pollock it was about 13 inches long. We put the Pollock back into the water because they are very bony. He then gave the sabiki rod to Roan and he started fishing with it. I then started to cast out the rod equipped with the lure. After a while Roan took a break so I took a turn on the sabiki rod and Mark took a turn on the rod with a lure. After a little while I started feeling a bunch of bites and I to caught a Pollock we let that one go to. We stopped after that because the mosquitos were coming out and it was getting too dark.

The next morning I got up early and with Papa I rigged the a rod with sabiki [we take off the sabiki after we go fishing to store it]. I dropped the line into the water, and after a few minutes I had got four mackerel on the sabiki! Two of them were about ten inches long, and the other two were about thirteen inches long. We released the two smaller mackerel and fillet the other ones. After that we fried them and ate them for breakfast. They were delicious.
