Nantucket Harbor

02 September 2012 | Nantucket Harbor, Nantucket Island, MA
Marta Portoles
We left Lake Tashmoo on Thursday. Roan and Mark set up the spinnaker as it was going to be a downwind sail to Nantucket. Mark raced everything with a sail in sight and did not rest until we were sailing about 0.5 to 1 knot faster than anyone our size.

The anchoring area is some distance from town as the prime spots are full with moorings. We anchored with the big guys and felt quite puny. The current in the harbor is significant and with winds blowing 20 to 30 knots in the opposite direction (about half of the time) translated into fairly wet trips to or from town.

On Friday morning, Bill and Laurie from SV Toodle-oo! came to introduce themselves. They're also members of the OCC (Ocean Cruising Club) organization and wanted to do a get together with other OCC members that evening in their boat. Naturally, we joined them and met a wonderful group of sailors: Jeff and Cindy from Wishbone, Pat and Stewart from Bizio (?) and Charlie from Watercolor. We had a great time while sharing experiences and stories. We hope to cross paths again with them sometime soon.

Marg and Matt joined us on Saturday for a couple of days of playing bridge and touring the island in rented bikes. We visited Surf Beach in the Atlantic side of the island, where the kids had a great time riding the waves. Alec stored a spectacular amount of sand that he democratically spread around town later on. He also left some in the Whaling Museum during our afternoon visit. We had visited the Whaling Museum in New Bedford, which comparatively had a lot more artifacts related to whaling including a half scale replica of a whaling boat. However, the Nantucket Museum was located in the original oil and candle manufacturing building so it was very interesting from the processing of whale oil point of view. There were presentations or movies every hour on whaling or Nantucket history and related topics. These presentations were excellent (a lot better than the movies at the New Bedford Whaling Museum).

All in all, I found Nantucket too manicured, too shopping centered and too expensive for a cruiser family on a budget like ours. So, Monday we will leave for Edgartown.
