Warderick Wells! Every single time someone says it, Alec and Roan are in stitches imitating the lisping Centurion in "The Life of Brian". Monthy Python humour apart, it is a breathtaking place. I can face giving you a boring description so you will just need to come an see for yourself :-)
Imagine transparent waters (Abacos, the waters that after the Cheesapeake appeared to us clear as drinking water, are turbid as tea per comparison), so transparent that, in windless days, the dinghy look as it was floating in air. Imagine an anchorage encircled by one big island in one side and little islands on the other. The center of the anchorage is sandy and very shallow. The two sides of the anchorage are lined with moorings which makes dealing with the currents easy. There is coral and a wreck near by filled with life. Because this is a National Park and fishing, conching and lobstering is forbidden, there are over-sized fish, lobster and conch. We saw at least 10 lobsters that could each fed our entire family. Same goes for snappers and groupers. I was pleased to be able to see them and sad that I could not snatch one for dinner (Ah! the dichotomy of good and evil!).
We snorkeled to our hearts content and then some more. We hiked up Boo Boo Hill in Warderick Wells Cay, named after some poor souls lost in a wreck that can still be heard crying on stormy days or so the legends say. Boaters for years have been using drift wood to carve or paint their boat's name and leave it at the top of the hill. Gail found a good size piece of wood and we used pieces of conch shells to immortalize Por Dos name and added to the ever growing pile.
Alas, we had to leave as Stewart and Dan were waiting for us in Staniel Cay where they had rented a cottage for a week. We could not wait to meet up with them. It had been way too long. Sammy was also flying to Staniel Cay at the same time. Mike was flying few days later and catching up with us just before New Year's Eve. It was going to be a full house/boat for the next few days.
