Lazin' on This Sunny Afternoon - in the doldrums

18 October 2013 | About 250 miles south of the equator.

Yes, we have the Kinks on board, and together with them, we are Lazin' on this Sunny Afternoon.

This is Friday, October 18, Day 10 of our journey. We are now in the doldrums, the region of no wind. And there is not "no wind", but very little wind. So, it is a different kind of experience, and is very special in it's own way. The sea is flat like a lake. There are the slightest little ripples from time to time depending on the breath of breeze. There is a long, very slow, and very flat but noticeable roll, like the roll of the prarie. The blue is stunning.

Today at daybreak, before we had our morning coffee and brekkie, we got the spinnaker up. The wind, or what little breath we might generously call wind had clocked around behind us. Perfect for the spinnaker. Up she went, big blue and white stripes filling the sky, and promising to bring untold speed to our travels. But even with the spinnaker, the wind was just too light for anything impressive. We were blazing along at 1.5 to 2.0 knots, hardly better than a drift. But the drift was steerable, so steer it we did, and had heaps of fun in the process. Maybe I should say Elisabeth had heaps of fun in the process. She said that we wanted the practice steering, so she had the wheel for it, and at one point, she got us up to 2.9. It was the highlight of the morning!

So, it was a great day even though we are slightly stuck in the doldrums. Like I said, it is a very special experience in its own right.

As always our position is shown of the right side of the page - just click on the map. Our day's progress (noon to Noon) is about 146 miles.

We will continue to keep you posted.
