Day 7

23 May 2016 | Right Here Where We Are
Rod
Monday, May 23

Day 7. We have changed course and are steering direct to Dutch Harbor. At least for now. It is a long trip, and we will change course many times for many things. We are still working our way up the NE Trade Winds, and are looking forward to the Horse Latitudes - the zone of change between the North East Trades and the Westerlies. They are coming up soon, and with them come changes in conditions. A milestone.

The temperature is changing. Slightly, but we can feel the change. It is more comfortable when we sleep - so we sleep a lot when not working. It's nice. Last night, both Elisabeth and I put a little cover over us as we slept. It's a very very light shawl, but still, last week we would have run from it.

Our conditions are these: Air temp about 28C as I write. Sea Temp has been dropping one point each day, and was 27.8C this morning. Our wind is from the east at 14 knots. The sky comes and goes, starting out grey in the morning and then becoming partly cloudy and mostly sunny. As we steer east, we have the seas to deal with. They come at us from the east at a height of about 1.5 meters, so they make the ride rough. To deal with that, we slow down, and I'm afraid we will not be setting any speed records this trip, but we are not beating the boat or crew either, so it's fine.

We have settled into a comfortable routine, and are quite happy. One week out. About three to go! Oh, just for reference, this is about the latitude of Hawaii and Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Not since 2010 have we been so far north. We checked our first logged point from when we left in 2010. It was around N20 30. We will pass that soon. Seems like a very long time ago. Be excellent to each other!
