Day 8

24 May 2016 | One Quarter There
Rod
Tuesday, May 24

Day 8. We are now past the one quarter mark. Majuro is over 800 miles behind us, and Dutch Harbor is (only) 2233 miles ahead of us. Did we say that this will be a long trip? It is. We are still steering as direct to Dutch as we can, but the wind is coming from the east and east/northeast, so we can only do what we can. This makes an interesting little funny. When we left Majuro, we cleared the local islands by steering a little to the west. We are now trying to get that distance back. We are only now just about even with Majuro. Our course made good is strictly north. After over 800 miles. We have work to do. Fear not, we will get it done.

We had an absolutely lovely day today. The air is warm, but not hot, the sky was beautiful blue with few clouds. For a little break this afternoon, we sat out together in the sunshine and shared a glass of tonic water with a squeeze of lime and a snack together. Like two teenagers on a date. On a beautiful ocean sailing on a beautiful boat with the girl of my dreams. I couldn't be happier.

Last night, I got to have a little conversation with a tanker ship. He was out of Peru, bound for Hong Kong. He was an AIS contact, and he saw us at a range of nearly 20 miles. Wonderful.

We had a culinary highlight today. Where can you get fresh, handmade tortillas when you are 800 miles north of Majuro? Yes, the galley of the good ship Proximity was serving up fresh, handmade tortillas, beans, onions, jalapenos and salsa for lunch. What did you have for lunch? Was it this good? Um Hmmm....

Ok, well then, we begin the second week of our journey. We both wish you the best, and we can see that a number of you have commented on the blog. Thank you so much. We cannot read these comments right now, but believe me, we will treasure them once we arrive. Meanwhile, I hope you continue to leave them. It makes us feel a little less alone out here. And it's a huge ocean. Very easy to feel like being out in space.

Be excellent to each other!
