Yo-ho-ho! Today is celebration time on Prrrfection.
We have done 1500 miles, with 1500 miles to go - we are halfway!
We have been two weeks at sea and we have been blessed with a very good crossing so far. The winds and current have been in our favor and crew and boat performing well. We have settled into a very relaxing cruising mode and the days fly past, with us carrying on with our daily routine. The girls are managing to do schoolwork most of the days, we also keep ourselves busy with little projects (there is always maintenance to do), reading and handcrafts. The girls are making lunch every day and it has now turned into a full "chef-training" process. So glad I brought my recipe books on this trip, otherwise I think I would have run out of ideas to keep them stimulated by now!
We have met up with another yacht on this trip, the second one so far! "Katuscha" appeared on the horizon two days ago and sailed about 2-4 miles away from us. It was nice to be in close radio contact and have a visual on another yacht, but they went on a different tack than us and we are now out of vhf-contact.
We are happy with the performance of the boat. We are averaging good speeds, taking in consideration that the boat is generally overloaded, more so during this passage, as we took on more diesel than usual, which we did not need up till now as we have been able to sail with the good, consistent winds. I invested in a software package before we left on this trip and with these computerised charts and route planner we plotted our trip and waypoints to have favorable currents along the way. It has worked out as planned and we have had a 1.4k current in our favor most of the way.
Except for the flying fish that land on the decks, we have not been lucky with trawling for fish. All the other boats doing the crossing, are reporting similar bad luck.
A tip for other cruisers - we bought little garden solar lights and that has been a huge saving of battery power during this trip. The lights charge during the day and have enough light for us to read during our watches at night.
And with this I end my update...another one will follow soon.
